It's why it should be called distance teaching and not distance learning.

Not in all situations. My child is learning and his teacher is working hard to make it so.

Teachers will never, ever do enough for some people.

It’s ok sweetie. It’s not like I’m losing sleep, dollars, or holidays over these failing excuses of a parent either way.

No it’s just the age & the format - not the teacher or the kids being anything but typical. Northam knows it’s not developmentally appropriate for them to be online all day in grades K-3. FCPS shows they don’t know about education by trying to force it. It’s mind boggling.

You don’t know about kids development if you think this is the failure of parents rather than the format.

OP- thanks for the positive thread - reminded me to send DS's principal a note about the hard work teachers are putting in.

I am the expert in child development but I did send in a FCPS cares yesterday. Everyone should do it if they have something good to say.

Anonymous wrote:It is insane. My daughter is in 3rd grade AAP at a good school. I know there are supposed to be "no stupid questions" but the kids just ask the same things over and over again. Then there are the kids that are clearly not paying attention, bouncing all over the place, that chime in after 10 minutes to ask questions about what the teacher went over 20 minutes ago.
These teachers deserve an enormous bonus for the BS they are putting up with. They are putting in so much time and effort.

Same was happening in the classroom. I tell my kid to mute the class noise when she's completing an assignment.

Sounds like DD’s 3rd grade class. I’m assuming it’s easier for teachers in the classroom to hold the students’ attention and to keep kids on task because they can actually see what’s happening and intervene when kids are getting distracted. There’s only so much teachers can do in DL.

You may want to suggest he share an email with the parents since the main reason this happens with my son is when he's googling and not actually watching class. I normally only find out about that when a teacher gmails DS to say "today we did X and your slides are still blank. What were you working on?". Otherwise it's hard for me to know it's happened again and he's slacking. I always super appreciate those notes since otherwise I wouldn't know.

OP here. My son is learning too, and while he is behind where he would be were he in regular school, I am not worried about him, mostly thanks to the dedication of his teacher. Overall I am worried about the achievement gap, but at the moment I am mostly just feeling so bad for the teachers.

I don’t think that distance learning (or teaching) is worthless, but dang it is rough on everybody.

Yup, I love sending in FCPS CARES. Easy way to let everyone in the supervisory chain know when a teacher is doing awesome.

Teaching kids in 3rd grade remotely should only have been an option for those who with very high-risk conditions. Relying on these kids to pay attention while they are sitting in their bedroom, or in their house next to their dog, with their toys and iPad within reach, has never been set up for success.

I feel for all younger elementary teachers, but everyone has to get back in-person if that's their choice. It's the only way this will get resolved.
