How to tell a friend that I prefer to not see her so frequently?

"Every week has become too much for me lately, so I need to switch to every other week."

That's it.

Haha yes

OP here. She won’t believe me if I blame covid unfortunately.
I will probably use “I can’t this Friday”, though I am pretty sure she will ask me why not etc etc. I will think of something though.

You don't want to is a fine enough reason. I dunno how you ladies maintain friendships when you can't seem to actually talk to people. I can absolutely tell my friends "I don't want to" and that is fine. Vice versa.

Just say you’re feeling overwhelmed and every other week works better. That’s still really often imo. I have close friends but given kids, work etc, I don’t see any that often.

Op here. First, I think I will try to switch to daytimes on weekends. Second, hopefully she has to spend time with her family on weekends and she will bail out.
I will update!

OP here. I started canceling every other friday. so far it works well. It helps that where I live restaurants are open outdoors so there's a little more variety. Thanks for helping me choose a strategy that seems to be working!

Why do you keep digging up these older threads just to write things like "you're welcome!"??

This is the 4th one I've seen you do this to!

I would make excuses (kid is sick, kid needs homework help, laundry today) until she falls into the new routine.
