Yes, they will go back Feb 22/23 (7 days after the 2nd shot) as a worse case. They can open earlier if the FCC PCR percentage positive stays below 8% for 7 days (today was 7.9%, so day 1).

VDH revised the numbers- FCC has been at 7.9 for 5 days now.

Noonan said he may not wait until the second shot if metrics improve. They will open sooner. They are so close. He should wait for teachers to be fully vaccinated since they are scheduled.

I didn't hear him saying may not wait, I heard him saying we will go back 1) when metric is met or 2) when teachers fully vaccinated, whichever happens first.

I disagree about waiting for 2nd shot. It's not scheduled yet and alot could happen to delay it. Plus that is another 4 weeks without in person learning. 4 weeks is insignificant to adults, but huge for young children who have been out of school since March. He should really reopen on Thursday- but barring that, the next Tuesday.

I'm in FCPS (just outside the City, like 5 houses over the line) and frustrated as well but it's like 500 people vs. 40,000. FCPS will be scheduling their 40k teachers over the next 3 weeks so hopefully that will go smoothly.

I'm sure there are benefits to being in a bigger school district, I'm just not sure what they are at the present moment.

Dr. Noonan just sent the email. VDH adjusted past 5 days to 7.9% (yellow). If these metrics hold, all grades will be back Jan 26th.

I can’t take the roller coaster ride! But I do hope the numbers hold. Doesn’t help that so many are traveling this 5 day weekend.

In a surprise announcement Thursday, F.C. City Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Noonan told an online town hall that the Fairfax Health Department will deploy a “closed pod” to Falls Church Monday to provide doses of the Moderna vaccine to all Falls Church City Schools’ teachers and staff.

Dr. Noonan hailed the decision, saying that once the teachers and staff then receive a second dose a month later, that all City schools’ classrooms could be open for direct teaching by Feb. 22 or 23.

Noonan said he was informed of the new policy early this morning after the health department suffered a crash of its website due to the volume of inquiries today.

Why does Falls Church City get this and not the rest of Fairfax County? It's not fair for the county to treat people who don't even pay taxes there better than our own residents. WTF?

Falls Church is an independent city on the borders of Fairfax County and Arlington County. It's very small (only one high school), so they can do things much more nimbly than Fairfax. However, if Fairfax weren't so concerned about keeping everything equitable, and instead focused on letting each district within Fairfax manage itself, it could do better. The bigger the bureaucracy, the slower (and worse).

You don't understand. Falls Church is PART OF the Fairfax County Health District. They're being favored even though they're part of OUR health district.

Aren’t you supposed to wait 2 weeks after the second shot? Or is that only Pfizer?

I thought it was a week after the second shot. Either way, doing it this way makes it easier to re-open on a set date because you will know that the staff has had the oppertunity to receive the vaccine.

So many uninformed people here. Pfizer is 2 weeks. Moderna is 4 weeks.

Does VA have enough vaccine to give all of those getting vaccinated now the second dose later on?

Teachers likely still can transmit Covid to their families, so until their families are also protected, it isn't safe for them to be back in the classroom. It wouldn't be safe for the students either, but I guess at that point it would be up to the parents to take that risk. But parents don't get to demand that teachers risk the health of their loved ones.

I heard from multiple places that Pfitzer was 7 days after the second shot to 95% efficacy.

There is zilch evidence that vaccinated people are still spreaders. If that is true, the value of vaccination is significantly reduced, and our vaccination priorities are messed up.

In a teacher and we were told they will have someone come in and vaccinate all of us in 4 weeks for the second shot the same way they are scheduling the first shot on Monday. It will be scheduled. My personal opinion is it is irresponsible for him to bring back the entire district instead of select cohorts when this has been scheduled. At a minimum, cohort 3 (middle and high) should wait since teenagers transmit this like adults.

They are still social distancing. Still wearing masks. Still doing the other mitigations. Plus a vaccine. Other schools have been back this whole time with less mitigations and have been doing fine and educating their kids.

That's wrong on both fronts. There is no evidence that vaccinated people are not able to spread. We simply don't know yet. And because we don't know and there are reasons to believe people can still spread it, we need to be cautious and assume they can. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/12/956051995/why-you-should-still-wear-a-mask-and-avoid-crowds-after-getting-the-covid-19-vac

As for the value of vaccination, it is still extremely valuable. First, it prevents those vaccinated from getting ill, even if they are able to spread it. Second, as more people get vaccinated, more will be protected.
