When I was working at a university in Canada (which is much safer than US), a graduate student was murdered in a lab by a drunk student on New Year day.

Rare? 2020 ended with 769 homicides — 274 more than the previous year. The shootings, robberies, car-jackings, and larcenies in Chicago are out of control.

IMO it's problematic that whenever someone gets killed in a "should be ok!" part of Chicago people all of a sudden care about the city and consider themselves experts.

This was crime unlike typical Chicago crime; also, the guy ended up getting shot by cops in Evanston after shooting people at an IHOP there, but I don't see people complaining about Evanston crime.

My sympathies to the grad student, the other people killed, and their families.

The university is not just in Hyde Park, half the campus is in Woodlawn. As for "Chicago is safe" - no, it is completely out of control. The mayor ought to resign. And Obama needs to build his Presidential Library east of campus a-sap. That library will flush out a lot of crime from the area.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this, since the shooter began his spree in Hyde Park and the student who got killed was also in Hyde Park (ie the South Side), and it's clearly made the news... I think regardless of where in the city it was, people would still be caring about a shooter going on a killing spree.

I agree that most of the city of Chicago and its environs are perfectly safe and lovely, including in the West and South Side. There are areas in the city that suffer from crime and poverty; there are some areas in the North, and more areas in the West and South Sides.

The spree ended nowhere near the Northwestern campus. And in fact, the spree ended precisely because the shooter crossed the border over into Evanston and was promptly stopped by Evanston police. I agree that Chicago is a wonderful city and that this event is an aberration rather than a rule, but let's be very clear that Evanston (and most parts of the north side of Chicago) are virtually indistinguishable from any other city in the U.S. when it comes to crime and safety.
