I grew up in Darien and went to high school in Greenwich.
If that's the type of place you are looking for, I think you'd be happy in either. (I wouldn't raise my kids in either, but that's a different story) As a PP has said, Darien has more of a small town vibe. The schools are very good, lots of socializing, not much diversity. It's a beautiful place, the beaches are quaint and pretty (great for kayaking, paddle boarding, picnics, but definitely not a destination beach!). It's a small town though, and everyone knows everyone, and it's definitely insanely preppy/cliquish/materialistic/(the reasons I wouldn't raise my kids there). Greenwich is much bigger and a bit more diverse but generally has the same vibe. It's also closer to the city, and traffic can be really bad so that's a consideration if you're commuting. |
Darien's demographics - 96% white. Both Darien and Greenwich are very expensive places to live. On DCUM, it's okay to want to live in such a segregated area; but the folks in more diverse areas are racists for any signs of segregation by SES and/or race within schools, towns, etc. ![]() |
It is not a "segregated area" you need to look up what that actually means in the dictionary before you start throwing it around. |

that is a bit of shit hole place, PP, right? |
the modern house is listed as being located in New Canaan. Was it the town that was Darien? |
Darien is super blonde and preppy. It’s picturesque and I love visiting but can’t imagine living there. |
I think the ice storm was new Canaan, but New Canaan and Darien are similar to each other, more so than to Greenwich. |
That's an offensive and discriminatory comment. There are many people who make that city their home. |
Aryans from Darien.
I find the people in Greenwich have money. The people in Darien are angry that they don’t have Greenwich money. If I had to chose I’d take Greenwich. Advisable to have generational wealth if you want to fit in. I thought long and hard on both towns as well as New Canaan. Couldn’t pull the trigger. I am not a WASP and although I have made a lot of money I would never fit in nor like the folks that live there. Very competitive - women are worse than the men. The most ignorant woman I ever met lived there - typical Darien - size 2, blonde - dumb as rocks but entitled and nasty. Completely obsessed with social standing and public persona. Couldn’t pay me to live anywhere near her. Husband worked for a hedge fund that was shuttered for insider trading. Hoping that paints the picture. |
discriminatory against what exactly? High crime rates and poor prospects? |
I’m the actual PP who said the Long Island Sound is disgusting, and I grew up in Westport. Nice to look at, sure, but I wouldn’t take my kids swimming at Sherwood or Compo beach. I’m not sure if Bridgeport has any public beaches. |
I know Westport. Paul Newman used to live there in the 80s when I was growing up in Greenwich. They had a darling bookshop we used to visit on the weekends. |
It is in no way a diverse population. |
