?? Why?

School should be in-person in the fall. But, I don't no know how comfortable I will be. They keep finding more instances of kids that are covid positive but with no-low to mild symptoms with physical changes and damage. So, yeah less kids show signs of illness the damage down is still unknown.
I really want my kid in-person, he learns best this way. I just don't know if it is worth the risk if numbers don't drop dramatically.

We have to be in person next year if not sooner. I’m very empathetic to protecting teachers right now. But if you are an elementary school teacher and don’t want to go back even vaccinated it’s time to consider a new job.

People like this PP are why school won't be open in the fall. They will pivot to concern about kids spreading as opposed to risk to teachers and teachers will pounce. Teachers union will exploit every last drop of this crisis.

They have already done plenty of exploiting of the irrational fears of parents about extremely unlikely serious outcomes for kids... Could they possibly do more of it?

But I agree that people like the PP - who think the slightest uncertainty about Covid risks is a reason to take the definitive risks closed schools pose to all children - are why most schools never opened in the US since last spring.

DCPS high school teacher here. I have no inside knowledge. My principal hasn’t even shared the Term 3 reopening plan for our school but I’m thinking four days of instruction and having that Wednesday for deep cleaning. But honestly, who knows with DCPS?

That would be the most absurd thing yet, after all the research we have now seen that says surface transmission is rare.

The best you will get is a 1/2 day on Wednesday.

Well, as a parent, I would appreciate more surface sanitation, but for norovirus prevention rather than Covid. Same reason I'm hoping handwashing sticks around.

The consequences of not opening schools in fall will be huge for kids and working parents compared to the risks of transmission. It would be absolutely terrible. But if teachers continue to pressure, middle class and UMC parents who wanted to stay in DCPS will leave for private schools or move to MoCo or VA. DCPS system will end up underfunded and with very bad rep.

Agree on the private school route, but not regarding MoCo or VA. Although with different creative reasoning, all in all they have absolutely the same situation and no clarity in sight.

Yeah the Wednesday thing is absurd if we go back in person. But they’ll do it for pandemic theater. They also won’t actually deep clean but that’s a whole separate issue.

Of course everyone can get it. But the spread will go way down once a lot of people are vaccinated. Distancing measures, testing, tracing, and quarantine will still be needed, but that’s no reason not to have school.
