Tulane or Wake Forest?

I vote Tulane. And while I did enjoy college it was no different than any other friend at other schools. You can’t party all the time and downtown gets old after the first quarter. Now though I’ll admit I came from a competitive high school where I knew how to balance school with a social life. My roommate from Wyoming took a little longer to learn how to balance it all. I had an excellent education and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. And yes, they give a great deal of academic scholarship money. And of course New Orleans is an amazing city.
BTW I’m an associate professor of medicine at a local university and found myself well prepared for medical school. |

I graduated from Tulane 20 years ago, so my information is admittedly dated, but the reputation Tulane has among parents as a place where people go to Bourbon Street to get sloshed is absurd. It is the equivalent of saying that everyone in DC is constantly going to the Lincoln Memorial. People party, but they party like college students - frat parties, neighborhood bars and house parties.
As for alumni networks - Tulane has a decent alumni group in DC, but I would never consider that it has helped open any doors for me, and in my professional life I rarely meet other Tulane grads. |

| DC applied to both Tulane and Wake Forest. DC was turned off on the WF tour by all the talk of grade deflation and “Work Forest.” Other families were asking about this on the tour as well. Any thoughts on this? |

| It is true. Daughter headed there next fall from an upper school known for grade deflation as well. |

| Both have robust party scenes, but Wake frats a little harder and has a social climate that can feel insular and stifling if you don't find your niche. Tulane's location makes it easier to disappear into the surrounding city if campus life starts to make you stir crazy. Academically, Wake by a hair, but the perception on this board of Tulane as a party school for rich private school kids who finished in the bottom half of their class is way off. It's a great school, too. |

| Sister went to Wake. DH to Tulane. Both on to ivy grad schools. Each loved chosen schools, is successful and happy. DH much more outgoing, into music, a foodie, etc. Sister much more reserved and serious. |

Tulane has a large population of Northeastern students, while Wake is more of a regional school. In terms of networks in NYC, Tulane is probably better.
The better question though is, why either? Expensive Southern private schools that aren't all that academically rigorous nor well recognized. |
