APS reopening plan?

This is what all the DC privates are doing. And colleges and universities as well.

It's not going to happen. Not with rates increasing as they are right now. I totally agree with you, but there is no local will to do this. At the very least, APS would have to let parents re-select DL or hybrid if they don't follow their previously announced metrics. This will take 6 weeks minimum, putting kids back in classrooms in March at the earliest.

For this spring, APS should be planning for outdoor lunch and classes to the greatest extent possible. Has APS ordered any tents? APS should be planning to open as many windows as possible for ventilation. Has APS mapped which classrooms have windows that open? For classrooms without windows we need to be purchasing HEPA air purifiers. This also hasnt been done. The essential work to reopen this spring still isn't happening. It's a total leadership fail.

In addition to the work for this spring, APS needs to start planning for an expanded summer school to catch kids up.

good points.. Agreed, the lack of effort put forth from APS to push for a safe return is pathetic.

Have you volunteered to go inside the slaughterhouses and look after the covid bearing kids? No? then why aren’t you S’ingTFU?

Nice. Shouldn't you go back to class. I'm sure your kids are wondering where there teacher is.

APS admin here. Duran definitely wants to go back. I do too to be honest with you.

Do you think he has always wanted to go back, or has he wanted to go back since he saw the failures? To be honest, my impression has been that he 'thinks' this is working- and everything is a ok- so I am thrilled to hear that he actually wants to go back.

Testing the schools on a weekly basis.

You see what the numbers did after Thanksgiving. They will do it even more after Christmas. No one is going back in January. Plan for childcare.

I think the failing numbers are what's leading him to push going back. But going back in January for the first time makes no sense at all. I'm all for hybrid/sending kids back...but during the absolute height of the pandemic is insane.

All of these things cost $$$$$ that the school system doesn't have. Are you personally offering to pay for all this?

You do realize that APS received ~10 million in CARES funding, right?

I personally think New York is going to be a disaster. Will be interesting to watch and see.

If people don’t want to go back, stay home. Stop trying to stall return to school for kids and families who are ready and have read the science.

Not everyone who wants to go hybrid eventually is like the public commuters at school board meetings. Many “read the science” and think the idea of returning now or January is insane. Most of the rabid APE types are NOT reading Greg science, or not absorbing it. They are not the brightest bulbs. They come with pre packaged talking points. If you engage them on studies and science they resort to headlines and anecdotes.

Why do they need to say they will reevaluate every month? With cases so high, they aren’t going back.

There seems to be a huge amount of denial on this board. Duran is a smart man, and he knows that at this point, getting (especially elementary) kids (and teachers) back to class ASAP is 100% necessary. For those that disagree, you have every right to do so. Families can continue with remote learning and teachers can either go back to the classroom or quit. This isn't' rocket science. Time to rip-off the band-aid!!

To me, the denial lies in treating all age groups and all types of schools the same. Good reasons and strong evidence to support safety for a K-5 return. Not so much with 6-12. Both in terms of ability to spread, impact of virus on that age group, and cohort mixing. All without regular surveillance testing recommended by national
Public health experts. So, it’s not denial to question return for middle and high. That’s science.
