Please name baby registry essentials

-Kimono style bodysuits/tops for the first month or two when their head is especially bobbly. And zipper sleepers. Anyone who prefers snaps is insane to me! Also if you’re particular about clothing style, I think it’s best to register for a few things so people will buy off your registry instead of random stuff they think is cute. OR even if they are inclined to buy random stuff they think is cute, they’ll have a sense of what you like.

-I personally wouldn’t register for big boxes of any diapers, instead buy a few smaller packs of newborn or size 1 diapers and try them out to see which brand works best for your baby. We landed on Honest after trying 5-6 of the competitors and I’m glad we didn’t just register for huge boxes of pampers which weren’t as good of a fit on our baby’s body type and led to more leaks.

- Tubby Todd All Over Ointment. This stuff is magic, some people swear by it for baby acne (though that clears on its own) but we are now in the face scratching phase and I can’t keep up with his nails. Tubby Todd clears up little scratches and blemishes instantly overnight- it’s seriously a miracle!

- Cradle Cap scrubber- Frida makes one but there are cheaper brands as well. Your kid will likely get cradle cap and I had literally never heard of it before baby. You will he happy to have it on hand.

- Temporal thermometer which is so much easier than a rectal. We have both and if I’ve ever been nervous about a fever, so easy to use the temporal one. We keep the rectal one on hand if we need a more accurate reading if he were to actually run a scary fever. Thankfully haven’t needed to use it yet.

- Gas drops/mylecon - we used Little Remedies. But especially in those first 6-8 weeks when their tummies are suuuper immature and they are grunty little gassy sleepers, this did wonders for us before bed.

- Portable sound machine for car and stroller (we have the marpac hush).

- Some sort of baby wrap or carrier suitable for the newborn stage. Some babies want to be held 24/7 and won’t be put down for a nap during this stage. This at least allows you to eat or go for a walk. Lifesaver for my little Velcro baby! We used the Solly wrap in the early days and love our Beco Gemini baby carrier now.

In your dreams. People will buy clothes wherever you want. You can register for natural, organic clothes all you want. But Aunt Sally will buy you a 5 pack of "mommy's little shopper" onesies that you cannot return.

Yes you're right Aunt Sally will still do that. But if you are particular and you want to curb Aunt Mary and Aunt Kathy from also doing that, I think registering for some stuff definitely helps. Some people will tell you not to register for clothes at all because people will just buy you what they want, but I think that's bad advice IF you care about what clothes you get. Registering for some dissuades some of the random aunts and grandma's friends.

And I say this as someone who accepted loads of hand-me-downs that aren't my "style" because baby clothes don't matter and I'm not an IG influencer. But I did register for a few things because I know it's what the grandmas and the aunts what to buy because they think it's so cute, and this helped narrow their options!

I just want to say that I didn't get anything "off registry" other than people's favorite books. To be fair, though, we didn't find out the sex. One baby was born we did receive a few sweet monogrammed items. But I had nothing for my baby to wear other than about 5 onesies when she was born.

Second car seat base.

I actually dont mind the PJs with snaps bc when changing a diaper I can open just the ones I need. I defin. like them better than ones that zip down from the top bc I think the baby gets cold when I have to open the whole top just to get at the diaper. The best IMO are the ones that zip from the bottom.

Amid covid, we havent needed a 2nd carseat base bc we go out so little. I am v glad I didnt buy it in advance bc it would have gone to waste; you can always order if it becomes an issue.

Remember regardless of how well you plan there will be things that you find yourself needing in a pinch. For me, it was items to manage breast feeding pain. These were the best: https://www.target.com/p/medela-tender-care-hydrogel-pads-4pk/-/A-10762139

Agree on the second carseat base. I'd go so far as to say in this COVID time, we didn't even need an infant carseat/travel system because we went so few places. I kind of wish we had just gotten the convertible car seat suitable for newborn stage. We've clipped our carseat into our stroller maybe a total of 10 times in 4 months, and majority of that for doctor's appointments. We just used the bassinet attachment or baby wore for walks in the newborn phase.

I guess this doesn't matter because I'm hopeful someone registering now will not have quite the intense COVID experience when their baby is here in a few months with the vaccine rolling out and getting through winter.

Pp here, I agree about the travel system. I am starting to look at next phase car seats and all the options I like could have held DD as a newborn.
