Standard poodles and kids... experience?

Yes, I just discovered those the other day! I guess they’re less common in the US. Cute size. We had Goldens ranging from 55-100 (overweight foster:lol, and I think the low-normal range of a standard is ok (inc. the moyen size). I like to be able to scoop them up in case of an emergency, or boost them into a vehicle when they’re older, so I would prefer under 65ish, but lap size isn’t a requirement (our 65# Golden regularly “sat” in my lap).

I’ll have to check those out, thanks! One of our Goldens loved swimming! We don’t have a pool here, though.

I think they mean a Portugese Water Dog. There is no Italian water dog.

Lagotto Romagnolo is what I found googling and seems to fit the description of predecessor to all water dogs. I’m sure they’re not easy to find here.

I have had a standard poodle. Sweet boy who never growled or snapped and was the opposite of neurotic. Those with ill-bred poodles likely got them from a puppy mill as a well bred poodle is a joy. After my first poodle I have never looked at another breed. I currently have a miniature poodle and like my standard poodle (SPOO) he has a fantastic temperament. I researched breeders and that is the key

^^. I am the above poster and I should share, via my research prior to adopting my mini, I was considering another standard poodle and concluded that if I get a standard again I would contact Piccolo Poodles as their dogs are beautiful and the breeder is the type I look for

Thanks, PP! Appreciate the rec. I've started researching std. poodles and am hoping to find one that breeds for temperament, and doesn't dock tails/remove dewclaws (at least no docking tails). It seems in some ways the AKC breeders for conformation and breeding for temperament are mutually exclusive.

You would have to ask the breeder about whether or not they talk tails. I agree most do. However looking at the pictures of the poodles at the breeder I recommended, their tails don’t look short. For my miniature, I got him from Canada. They do not dock poodle tails in Canada.

I got one of my current Standards from an unconventional but reputable and ethical breeder who breeds for temperament and offers docked as well as not docked tails. We are VERY happy with our poodle from her. She is worth calling if you want to see what a breeder who is really going for temperament and would sell undocked tails is like. She has very limited litters per year since she breeds at her house and her puppies are raised in her home with her kids. Her website is down right now but you can find her on FB. https://www.facebook.com/ravenrockstandardpoodles

We have a standard poodle who is just wonderful with kids--our own and others'. My kids were 4 and 7 when we got our dog. I had a mini growing up who was also a sweetie but much more neurotic.

Did you find them locally? Any good breeder name to suggest?

What is your price range?

I’m seeing generally around $2500-3000 for what appear to be ethical not-backyard or puppy mill breeder pups selling companion, limited registration dogs. Not 100% sure why that matters, unless you’re just trying to suss out what kind of puppy buyer we are. I wouldn’t say we have a price range, but I’m not paying $13k for a “pretrained” doodle. -OP

Look at masdogs.com; service dog breeder that doesn't dock tails or remove dew claws.
