FCCPS petition to support reopening schools

And if you were in FCC you would not be wanting schools to open when you literally have 70 cases and 2 grades have already started back? There is a virtual option for anyone who prefers and they can reevaluate in mid-January. No one has to switch teachers or classes. My elementary student will have no more than 7 kids in their class. Daycares and private schools have been open with very few to no issues. FCCPS is a small system and has the flexibility and a plan to make this work. The virtual only people don't want their kids to miss out so they are trying to ruin it for everyone else.

This isn't true. There are 80 confirmed. (My beef isn't with the difference of 10, by the way.) Many, many, many FCC families had Covid and weren't tested in March/April. I know of at least one now, with kids scheduled to return to TJ and MD next week, with a parent isolating with mild symptoms who are not testing so that kids can still return next week. The "80 cases" is presenting a false sense of invincibility.

Anecdotally, yes, I think a lot of people in FCC did have it in March/April. And all serious scientists agree that affords some level of immunity. All the more reason t get kids back in school - distanced, with masks, safely.

Very selfish but not surprising. Parents will do anything to have their kids return in person. This is true in every district.

I take issue with the "selfish" claim. This is about kids, not parents. I am personally able to stay home and work with my kids on their schoolwork all day long. We have financial resources and are paying for three separate virtual tutors for various subjects. I worry about kids with parents who have to work out of the house. I worry about kids whose parents can't afford tutors.

Very few, if any, kids are truly staying shut indoors and not going around other kids. That's just reality. I don't believe staying away from school is providing any more protection, particularly when the classes are going to be so small and they're going to be masked the entire time.

I’m the PP you quoted and you are right. The latest dashboard I found was 79. And that’s really awful that parents are isolating and still sending their kids. My kids go to these schools and I am horrified.

Another change.org petition. Because the multiple ridiculous previous online petitions in the area of entitled parents "demanding" schools open have been soooooo effective.

The laughable sofa activism of the hapless bored housewife. LOL.

It’s not selfish to want our kids to return to school! This whole website exists in large part so we can anonymously obsess over our children’s academic abilities, lack thereof and prospects for their future. It’s safe to say that education is a shared value here regardless of the decisions our families reached about whether to send our kids. Reasonable minds can differ about whether or not the return to school is a good idea and I’m glad to have the discussion. However, the 80% in the community who elected to send their kids back on a hybrid basis are not selfish. We’re people who feel that Dr. Noonan and the school board are taking reasonable precautions to protect students and staff and that the benefits of in person outweigh the risks presented.

I posted it was selfish to hide symptoms, stay in your house, avoid testing out of fear of being positive and send your kids to school anyway.

honestly, if I knew a person doing this I would rat them out- they are jeopradizing return to school for all. So what if their kids are delayed 2 weeks, if their kids share COVID, they will delay the entire school system for months.

Shame on OP and her ilk. Posting this at a time when the nationwide surge has reached our area, local hospitals are getting full and healthcare professionals are once again feeling great strain.

I feel utter disgust for people like you.

i feel utter disgust for people who post crap like this full of fear mongering and falsehoods.

1. Local hospitals- no where close to full, especially not with COVID patients. Right now there are slightly less than 1300 COVID patients hospitalized statewide. There are 7000 beds still available state wide. News Flash- prior to COVID hospitals operated at 90-100 capacity all the time, that's how they make money. We have never tried to say school shouldn't be open b/c hospitals are full. 258 COVID patients statewide in the ICU, 115 of those are on a ventilator. There are 2,936 ventilators available in VA.
https://www.vhha.com/communications/virginia-hospital-covid-19-data-dashboard/

2. Numbers in the area are on a 'gentle rise' according to Fairfax county, not a surge.

3. When masks are worn, as they are in school, COVID does not spread. COVID spreads when masks are taken off in indoor environments. Thus, there is no reason to keep kids out of school b/c of COVID.

4. We are talking FCCPS here- FCCPS has the best COVID numbers in the area.

School is a priority and should have been open since August.

I would have signed bit I read the comment of one parent who always has extremely negative things to say on FB and Listservs (rants and throws fits on the most insignificant of things) and I didn’t want to be associated with her opinions.

Please. People like you were demanding the schools stay closed when the country went down to 20,000 cases. If you want to lock yourself in your house until all 8 billion people in the world have been vaccinated, feel free.

It's actually kind of an American thing to do - express your opinion to your democratically elected leaders who make the decisions for the community.

Please don't let one obnoxious person keep you silent. If you agree schools should be reopened as is the current plan, sign it.
