Don't rush to fix everything. I have tweens, teens and adult kids. I do a lot of "Oh, wow" and "Huh" when listening, interspersed with some active listening "so you're angry at Janie because she told Jordan you like him even though you DO like him but you didn't want him to know?"

Encourage them to find their own solutions. "What do you think your options of handling this are? Okay, and what are the pros and cons of doing that?"

But also teach them to stand up for themselves by being an example. I was proud than the time I was waiting for my DD while she paid for something, a guy cut her, and she tapped him on the shoulder and sweetly said, "Excuse me, the line is here, I was ahead of you" and stepped in front of him.
