Racist? How, exactly? He is an educated AA man with abhorrent (and dumb) views. Just like educated white men who love Trump and believe COVID is a Chinese hoax and do not acknowledge climate change. |
Partially, but there are also many jobs that his constituents do not want to do. The U.S. economy is based, in part, on new immigrant labor. |
TW is racist. He needs to go. It is kind to think that he is just ignorant. He knows what he is doing. |
Agreed - I was questioning whether calling TW dumb is a racist statement. People of every color and creed can be dumb. |
Bingo. |
No, there are many jobs that undocumented people will do for far less. Why would citizens and legal residents take less pay than they deserve? May as well use the safety net programs instead. |
There is NOBODY on a DC construction site getting paid less than minimum wage. Nobody. Fact of the matter is that the work is hard. Not everybody wants to do it. |
B.S. Hmmm a dangerous job where the risk of being injured is high. I wonder why an employer of construction workers would want workers who would not have any recourse if something goes wrong . |
EXACTLY. Just throw them away and hire another illegal to replace him. What’s the hurt guy gonna do? Complain to the govt so they can deport him? |
Oh, so basically you’re saying that Black people are just lazy, then? How woke of you.
|
+1 the casual racism is not surprising. |
Well, it is not very woke of you to not acknowledge that whole sectors of the economy are not based on brown immigrant bodies - agriculture, meat packing, child-minding, elder care, etc. Your argument is that wages are stagnant and depressed by immigrant labor. Labor economists have looked at this proposition and have determined that immigrant labor is not supplanting AA labor in significant numbers (or white, non-college educated labor). There are certain jobs that AA and white people prefer not to do. It’s a cheap thrill (and racist) to argue that Hispanics are stealing jobs from AA people - but there is no evidence that this is true in DC or otherwise. |
Whole sectors are full of immigrant labor because they are easily exploitable. Period. And yes, it does suppress wages for American works and particularly Black American workers. It is not racist to point that out. If you think that most researchers care to look into issues of the Black community, you are absolutely wrong. 1) because very few people care and 2)it doesn't fit the narrative that is constantly pushed https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/09/trump-clinton-immigration-economy-unemployment-jobs-214216 "Both low- and high-skilled natives are affected by the influx of immigrants. But because a disproportionate percentage of immigrants have few skills, it is low-skilled American workers, including many blacks and Hispanics, who have suffered most from this wage dip. The monetary loss is sizable. The typical high school dropout earns about $25,000 annually. According to census data, immigrants admitted in the past two decades lacking a high school diploma have increased the size of the low-skilled workforce by roughly 25 percent. As a result, the earnings of this particularly vulnerable group dropped by between $800 and $1,500 each year." |

How does anyone on this thread -- or the racist-ass council member -- know that the workers there were undocumented immigrants "stealing" jobs from local residents. Did they demand to see their papers like some Trumpist goon in Alabama would do?
Hear me out: maybe they were just hard-working people trying to get by who happened to be Hispanic. Imagine that. |
| The article laid it out pretty clearly. |
