Say something nice about a local club

OP - I imagine you were thinking only of travel but I am thankful for all of the parents out their who spend their time volunteering to coach rec teams- anywhere!

Have you noticed Metro's game record is at the bottom of every age group in the GA? Even the NPL GFR teams struggle. Great org. So much for the coaching style.

My DD played for MSI from Rec, to Classic then Academy (travel). They are a class act club. They are not the typical money sucking machine. Only problem with them is that their travel program is very small compared to their Rec and Classic programs.

Results matter less than a lot of things.

It's Metro United. Not Manchester United.

The people I know who are involved with Metro United are terrific. I do wonder how such a geographically awkward partnership will work out in the long run. I can't imagine a lot of people traveling from D.C. or Potomac to Great Falls at rush hour, and I wonder if Herndon or Vienna would be better partners. (Disclaimer: I live in Vienna, coached in rec league, ref there, etc.)

I agree. My DD made their part-time team. Due to the distance from MD, I decided not to have her join.

Arlington - I know it’s not perfect, but I love the fact that it has a strong woman leading the GA program.

I agree. It’s good for the girls to have women as role models in leadership positions. And she is no slouch — I love that my GK daughter gets some training from a former Canadian national team GK.
I love this as well. Nicci is a strong and amazing role model for our youth.

The 2 other clubs around us (Alexandria & SYC) are much better

If results don't matter, then what does? Doesn't everything eventually lead to results if you are in a competitive environment? There are few points given for personality in competition.

When it comes to development, too many people are focused on results in terms of a record. What really should be bred in players is the desire to win in every single play. If you do that, you probably will win more often than not, but you’re really squeezing the most juice that you can out of every single player. The goal should be to develop individuals so that they’re capable of playing at a higher level, while learning how to play within system and game model of their team’s particular structure. The problem is people misconstrue this and hinder the player’s development in order to try and get results exclusively, then have a self-aggrandized view of themselves because “they’re winning.” Player decision-making, technical ability, awareness, creativity, and even the physical training needed to play in a progressive manner, are sacrificed. Players aren’t pushed beyond or even just to the limits of what they could possibly become. The development structure also ends too early at U18-19.

Because for the overwhelming majority high school is the age where they will play their most competitor soccer, a small percentage will play in college for their schools and some will play club or IM level. Given that, a focus on peaking at 16-18 makes sense

FCV is associated with The St. James. TSJ has amazing facilities. I wish my kids had access to that indoor field when the weather gets bad.

Other snarky comments withheld.

It doesn’t matter if they make it to a higher level or not. Like you said, talent is usually the main decider. But in what you’re suggesting, they’re not peaking, not even coming close to it. It fails the players in their development, and it ends up becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

We love Mclean. Excellent coaches, especially their U9-12 AGD!!

I love how Sterling handles their rec program. Kids practice on the same high quality fields as their travel teams and get 1/2 of the full size field.

Clyde Watson-McLean. Jamil Faryadi-McLean. Coach Q-Pipeline. German Peri-Arlington. There are four nice things. Jamil and German learned from J.C. the GOAT. Still the best coach this area has seen.

We love playing at TAFC. There is no pressure about being cut or making the team year to year. Very good family like culture. Creativity and playing beyond your current skill level is encouraged.
