Also, someone needs to loop Vern Williams in - he is one of the best educators we've had in Virginia and possibly the United States.
https://mathreasoning.com/news-writing/my-take-proposed-tj-admissions-process "So what should be done to improve the admissions process instead of destroying it? Create a test that is prep proof (I could easily help with that) and truly test the higher level thinking skills needed for many of the advanced math and science concepts encountered at TJ. Keep the teacher recommendation as part of the process since middle school teachers truly know the capabilities, interests, and passions of their students. To suggest that they might show bias (as has been alleged by some) in their recommendations is an insult to every FCPS middle school teacher. Create a quality information/activities piece where students are asked to describe their successes as well as how they reacted to setbacks. I can discern between students who join Mathcounts or Science Olympiad in order to pad their resumes and those who join because they genuinely love math and science. Even if it means conducting interviews, the difference can be determined." |
it should be taking the best students period. Race should have nothing to do with it |
|
More from Vern Williams - sorry I just read this and had to share:
"During my forty-plus years as an FCPS teacher I always made clear that I would never view my students through a racial or cultural lens. I am part of the old school crowd who still believes, as did Martin Luther King, that one should be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. The “One Fairfax” doctrine seems to suggest the opposite view. I sense that changing the TJ Admissions process is only the beginning. Every program for advanced/gifted students ranging from AP participation to AAP will be viewed through a racial lens instead of an academic/readiness lens. I feel that they will be diluted to the point of non-existence." |
All the rhetoric about "saving" TJ is completely over-the-top. According to Asra, the "future of America" depends on preserving TJ in exactly its current form; otherwise it's an attack on Asians. GTFOH. But it's a low-no-cost proposition for Warner to try and placate Asra, although he very quickly pivoted to Trump's labeling Covid-19 the "Wuh*n virus" and the "China fl*" and the actions of the Chinese government (i.e. toward Uighurs) as what he sees as discriminatory. Sure, he said he'll defend "merit." Did he say he'd defend her version of "merit"? Not at all. If she thinks he's going to do any heavy lifting for her, she's delusional. She wants to hold herself out as a big power broker for the entire Asian community, when she's actually just one particularly strident TJ parent. |
Williams lost me when he claimed TJ was built for its current test-in students. It was not. It was built for students living in Alexandria, Annandale and Falls Church in 1964. The school was then taken away from the community for which it was built at the whims of a Republican-controlled county government in the mid-1980s, and FCPS has been dealing with the fallout ever since. He can solve all the proofs he wants, but he can't rewrite history. |
What is this misinformation? TJ was established in 1985 to provide a specialized education for the students of Fairfax County. |
SJWs don't believe in MLK anymore. They now believe in IXK (Ibram X. Kendi). “The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.” |
No you are wrong Disadvantaged groups should have help That is the American way Don’t impose your caste system here |
Selective listening too much? I guess we are trying to rewrite history here with this incredibly racist move of removing race blind admissions. And forcing quotas. We all know who this elaborate charade really helps. It is not the disadvantaged kids.
|
|
Who are you referring to when you say your caste system?
This is not about helping disadvantaged by any means.
|
the incredibly racist move or removing one race blind system for a another race blind system that has a regional balance? Right not TJ exists not just for a narrow section of the county in terms of race, but also in terms of geography. TJ was never meant to be just a pyramid school for Carson and Longfellow |
|
the American way is about taking the best and brightest and most talented aka the land of opportunity
now overly woke SJW democrats want everything to be about race well actually just about some races (URM) it total and complete bs |
|
Vern Williams spoke at last night’s SB meeting. The fact that his input wasn’t sought shows how agenda-driven this process has been. They know what they want to do and are just trying to rig admissions to get the numbers.
Mr. Williams has offered to write a non preppable test. TJ teachers could write the test. Mr. Williams has offered to mentor underrepresented middle schoolers for free. Brabrand and Qarni just don’t care about merit. |
Yes, geography, the old tool Harvard used to limit Jewish enrollment. |
when has that ever actually been the American way? Can you point to a time where that is even a remotely true statement? |
