| You’d think the pandemic is driving more people to commit more time and money on things that will get their children out of the house. I know DH and I are. |
This is true - my kid is on a 14u travel team where other kids want to join because the coaching is pretty good and the parents are not nuts. My son wants a more competitive team but I have no idea how to find one with a good coach. I am well aware of how important it is, but all I know about other travel teams is their names, and who beat who when we last played them. I wish I could pay someone for an hour of their time to make me a list of target Teams my son should try out for! He is ill served having this clueless lady for a mom. |
I’m the one you quoted. If you tell me what part of the dmv you live in I can give you the best options. |
| I'm a different poster but would love to hear your recommendations. My son would be 10u. We live in Tenleytown, DC and are considering DC and MoCo teams as options. |
| If you're in DC I'd check out DC Dynasty, Wild Bill, and Win Within. |
| What about teams in VA? |
| This is just my personal opinion but the DC teams that we’ve played against Wild Bill, Dynasty, and Win Within have been less than impressive. That’s not from a talent or competitive standpoint (for the most part they aren’t) but the coaching is well below the standard of what a good team should offer to develop players. You can tell their players aren’t prepared to compete from a baseball IQ standpoint, and the coaches tend to openly take their frustrations out on the players. |
What’s his previous experience? That will help me point you in the right direction. |
| Thank you. He's played little league since he was 4. He's always played 'up', most recently last Fall was 9 and in a division for 9-11 year olds. He's a very solid hitter (was 5th in the order) and has a strong arm. He enjoyed playing 3rd and Left Field last year - both where he did well. He's worked on his pitching where he's showing more consistency. Thank you again. |
Pitching is an area I would focus on if you have an opportunity. Most solid travel programs prefer to have players that all pitch. For instance our program at the 10u level carries 12 players and of the 12 I think 11 of the kids pitch. This is just the way we develop players. If competitive baseball is what your son is looking for then I’d say steer clear of the DC based teams and play for a Montgomery county team that’s just down the street from Tenleytown. |
| Thanks again! |
| You’ll also want to do a couple of clinics with pro coaches. I’d do at least one for pitching and one for hitting. And go with your DS so you know what you should be watching out for. Otherwise he might immediately forget the key lessons. Kids can make real jumps developmentally after clinics. |
Thanks, Coach! We live in the Burtonsville area. Anywhere along the ICC would work (Rockville, Olney, Colesville, Burtonsville, Laurel, Fulton). |
Convenience is key with travel baseball. 3/4 days per week you’ll have to dedicate to practices or games so you won’t really want to have to travel. I’d say find a team where practices are no more than 30 minutes away from your home. I know there’s a buttons like storm program and the olney bucs/pirates organizations you could look into. |
| Sorry it posted as “buttons”. I meant Burtonsville. |
