| Thanks everyone! This is helpful!! I’m going to try just the Haakaa (instead of full blown pumping) tonight/in the morning if it gets too unbearable. |
| My kid STTN at 8 weeks and I never fed/pumped at night and kiddo had 95% breast milk /5% formula (for convenience of co-parenting/caring, not bc of low supply) through 12 months. Was never so happy as to quit breastfeeding/pumping, but supply issues related to STTN were never an issue. |
| My 3M old goes down at 8pm, gets a dream feed at 11 and then eats when she wakes up at 7 am. I dont pump overnight but I likely should. My breasts are full in the AM when we get up; I pump as much as I can after baby is done eating but I tend to have just enough for the baby. I have struggled to create a fridge stash so I think we are looking at combo feeding if/when I got back to work in the new year. |
| I think from months 6-9 I pumped once before my bedtime, or I would be too uncomfortable to sleep. If you're waking up uncomfortable at 4:45 try just hand expressing a bit to relieve the pressure. If you have a full-scale pumping session, you're never going to let your body adjust to making less milk. |
| For those of you who did pump a little for relief - did you feed that milk to your baby later or just stash it? I think I may have oversupply because my baby does not seem hungry for a bottle of milk in addition to my nursing sessions. I don't have a huge freezer so I don't want to be stashing 6 oz every day (I'm only pumping for 4 minutes and getting 6 oz super fast, and my breasts still feel full after because I'm just relieving pressure). Maybe donate? |
I froze it and donated it. I did it back in June, but it required doing blood work which you have to be comfortable with. I also needed my OB and pediatrician to sign off on it. I'm so glad I did it because I wanted to give back but it's OK to keep it for later use too. I would not recommend the Haakaa to pump to relief. It's not likely to trigger a let down or offer relief pretty quick. The point is to attach it to your other boob while feeding on one side to catch leaking. I would recommend an actual pump or waking the baby to eat. I have definitely woken baby because it's quicker and easier than doing a pump at 3am. |
I'm confused - do you somehow think it's normal for babies to nurse and THEN take a bottle? You only need to give them a bottle afterwards in special situations. Why are you pumping? Sorry, I think this whole idea of pumping to relieve pressure has kind of gotten out of control. How old is your baby? You really should not have to be constantly pumping to relieve pressure. Oversupply is temporary and adjusts itself. Yes, you can definitely donate this milk! |
My baby will be 7 months next week. The pumping for relief is because I cannot go all night, I’m super engorged by the 10 hour mark. I’m barely pumping - literally 3-4 minutes, and producing what seems like a “ton” (6 ounces) in that very short time. What I meant about feeding later is that before baby was STTN, I assume she was drinking more ounces per day since I was never engorged or pumping previously. I had put the extra milk in the fridge to offer mixed in with oatmeal or in a sippy cup or bottle if she seemed extra hungry from the decrease in ounces over a 24 hr period. But it really doesn’t get touched since she isn’t hungry. I will look into donating. |
