Does this sound right??

But for a great nanny, above-board, probably with some overtime hours?, I think $3300/month is in the ballpark and doesn't sound crazy to me.

I say go for it and move quickly if you think this is a good situation for you.

+1. I agree. With another wave of covid expected, nanny shares are in the highest demand.

If that’s the nanny’s rate then it sounds right. You don’t get to determine if a nanny’s rate is correct. You only get to decide if it’s right for you. Clearly this nanny isn’t for you and you need to step aside. You can find a cheaper nanny and this nanny can find a family that can afford her rate.

We just learned that the expected cost (paying above board and with a healthcare stipend) is almost $3300/month JUST FOR OUR HALF OF THE NANNYSHARE!!

Is this normal for DC? We're in the Capitol Hill area.

Thanks for any input. We're new to the nanny share world and I am having sticker shock, for sure.

Also, how much is daycare/month on average?

Let’s do the math on it, then.

$3300/month * 12mon/yr. = $39600/yr
$39600/yr / 52wk/yr = $761.54/wk
$761.54/wk / 5days/wk = $152.31/day

That’s a little high, but not astronomical.

Ok, backtrack a bit. You don’t state the hours or rare, so let’s look at that.

$761.54/wk / 40hours/wk = $19.04/hr if it’s 40 hours, no overtime. That’s a bit high.
$761.54/wk / 47.5hours/wk (45 worked hours, 5 hours overtime at 1.5x) = $16.03/hr That’s more reasonable, and during covid, you’ll be hard pressed to find lower.
$761.54/wk / 55hours/wk (50 worked hours, 10 hours overtime at 1.5x) = $13.85/hr That’s a steal, especially during covid.

So, how many hours and what’s the rate? Also, what are the qualifications (education, experience, target language)? Talking solely in terms of gross monthly is not really possible.

OP said that’s only for ONE HALF of the share.

Right, but some things that PP didn't include are the cost of having a nanny, like taxes, workers' comp insurance and nanny's health insurance. I don't know what they come out to be per month, but that would certainly decrease the actual pay of the nanny. Plus, OP never did answer the question about OT. If you are looking at 10 additional hours a week, plus taxes, workers' comp insurance and health insurance (plus maybe a payroll service), then it doesn't sound out of line to me.

Folks please keep in mind that not all nannies are married or have a second income. Many of us have to live on our salaries and need to live close enough to our employers so that we can be reliable. If you can't afford a nanny look into other options.

Nannies with graduate degrees, skill with multiple foreign languages, and lots of experience are popular with wealthier CH families. But you can find younger nannies who are great for a lot less money.

Also, a secret: every one of those super high-paid nannies is also sitting at the park, staring at their phone, while the kids they watch play. Maybe they do more around the house, maybe little Caroline or whatever is becoming fluent in French (she is not). But the truth is, those nannies are doing exactly what parents would be doing — shooting the shit with their friends and texting.

Save your money. You need someone reliable who has good rapport with your kid and can pass a background check. The rest is window dressing.
Total BS. The nannies that I know who are paid accordingly are interacting with their charges, handling some online schooling, have First Aid/CPR training and usually care about their jobs. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience but no, nannies do not spend their days shooting the shit with their friends and texting. As far as the parents, well you might be right about that but again they are doing it for free.

This. for a share it's way too much. Get your own nanny if you can pay this.

Simply not in my experience. That’s the truth. The nannies I know are all very involved with the kids. The mothers I know tend to be on their phones. I’m not in DC, btw.

If it’s Bethesda nannies then I expect them to sit on their asses. Bethesda parents don’t pay sh*t.

That seems really high to me, OP.

Sounds right to me for a great nanny. However if it’s too much for you, it’s too much for you. No shame in that. The nanny share will find someone else quickly so don’t feel quirky for backing out. Daycares are open and safe now. Better a good daycare than a bad nanny.

I'm betting this person wants 50 hours a week of care, i.e. 10 hours of overtime.

There are nannies in the DC area that only cost a family $39,600 a year?

This. SO TRUE!!

I was at a park with my nk. (Not in DC at the time, pre Covid)

Nannies on the ground in the sand area. While talking with each other they engaged with the children. All the children. Building, playing, in the sand. Or a few would move to the swings. Or sit on the benches and nks have snacks. But they were engaging with this charges. And they had to deal with soooo many other kids — kids who’s moms strolled in, parked on a bench. Face in the phone not paying attention. Only looking up when another mom would stroll in sitting next to other moms away from the kids.
The nannies - helping and playing with those children who’s moms say in the corner talking and scrolling through FB

So while the nannies may chat together- at least they are attending to the children.

But you know moms need a “break” from their kids.
