Why does JHU have so low name recognition / lay prestige?

Kind of sad that this is of concern to you.

That should not be how you pick your kid's school (Wah, people might not be impressed enough!)

Hopefully you will let her choose, based upon more substantive criteria.

Small (not a lot of alums) engineering (alums not in publicly visible positions) school.

Most famous alum, who did a lot for the school, was never public about what he was doing.

The undergraduate experience at Hopkins is intensely competitive and the school is situated in a marginal location. I went there forty years ago and it hasn’t gotten any better in that time. The undergraduate school exists to fund the graduate school. There are lots better places to go to college where the student can expect some joy thrown into the experience.

JHU is not known for undergrad.

You again? Maybe let the people who actually went there speak for themselves. I had a fantastic undergrad experience.

I’ve never posted on this subject before. Don’t be so defensive.

The hospital and medical school are in a crappy area. The undergrad campus is in Charles Village, With abuts Guilford and Roland Park. It isn’t the least bit crappy.

Not knowing what they are talking about never stops anyone on dcum.

Really? Someone posts the exact same line in every Hopkins thread, right down to I didn’t go there Undergrad but was a TA.

Hopkins has had tons of success in D3 swimming, baseball and football among others. There are a large number of student athletes. If you want a nationally ranked football program, obviously better to go to USC or Michigan.

USC is in a shitty area of Los Angeles. It's not unusual to hear about USC students getting murdered. Google. Not exaggerating.

For many years, no.

DP. I went to JHU as an undergrad and didn’t have a fantastic experience. It was fine, nothing terrible happened, but if I were an 18 year old again picking a school at which to spend the next four years of my life...it wouldn’t be Johns Hopkins.

But there are still idiots willing to drop a $400k bribe to get their kids in, LOL.
