Witnessing public drug use is becoming more common in DC

The area around Chevy Chase pavilion smells like a Rastafarian concert in Jamaica

Weed users need to be ostracized as much as cigarette smokers. My right to breathe unpolluted air supercedes your personal choice. We also don't tolerate open drinking. Tired of DC reeking of weed everywhere.

I mean, smoking is permitted in public, but there are restrictions on smoking near entrances, etc. Those should apply with equal force no matter what you're smoking.

People like you are so annoying, pulling out your trite insult (Karen) all the time. You weren’t there - you don’t know what happened. So instead of insults, constructively contribute to the conversation (e.g. “that hasn’t been my experience” or “I don’t agree.”) Otherwise, just move along.

I think people should be reminded that smoking marijuana is a privilege that shouldn’t be misused. Is it possible the city could mount some kind of civic campaign to teach people the correct way and places to smoke?

Wow. so true.

Smoke cigarettes is permitted in public. Smoking marijuana in public is NOT permitted. Don't spread misinformation. Please educate yourself prior to posting. Just because there is no enforcement of a law does not make the law go away.

You know why? Because gentrification happened over night in DC. You are living in someone else's world and expected it to change immediately. People are pushing back.

It’s a friggin major metropolitan city where the hell are you people from why are you so surprised what the hell kind of absurd utopian fantasies did you have of life in the big city?
Did expect to see no poverty, no crime, no drug use, just everybody well-to-do and neighborly and out having picnics all the time?

Geezus you folks have some warped expectations.

I’ve lived in major cities for almost 30 years. There was a marked uptick in public drug use/ODs and public sales starting around 2016 or so.

Uptick my ass drug use has been around and always will be. The only variation is the time you bother paying attention to the shit.
When it’s stinking down the street you don’t give it a second thought even though it’s RIGHT THERE but you ain’t sweating it cause it ain’t around you.
It ain’t until the shit starts smelling on your block that you start paying attention and suddenly think there’s an “uptick” but it’s not because the shit has always been RIGHT THERE you just wadn’t paying attention or just didn’t give a shit.
You been in cities long enough to not be so naive.

Yea let’s just criminalize it again for the sake of a a few fragile and delicate flowers, offended someone might harmlessly enjoy their time in a way that they don’t approve of.

The topic is "witnessing public drug is is becoming more common in DC." And my answer is -- absolutely, it is becoming more common where I live. The fact that I've lived here and in other cities is what makes me notice the change. Do you somehow think open drug use isn't impacted by the market of drugs? It's not a stable thing. We did not always have "mass casualty" K2 OD events ... The drug market has changed significantly over the past 5-10 years, with the addition of synthetics like K2 and fentanyl.

Gentrification does not happen overnight. Plus people often use this word to mean negative connotation. City is getting better. Parks are being cleaned up, new libraries. Some people are being pushed out.

But perhaps you should look at the council for answers. They keep pushing they draconian laws against landlords that it is now way too risky to rent to lower income tenants. You need 2 years rent, in cash, in the bank as a cushion just in case your tenant decides he no longer wants to pay rent (not saying unable here, big difference).

Happened to us and we are done with renting. Now are basement unit stays empty.
