You can have great snow boots without being fugly! I bought these a few years ago. The shoe part of the boot is not suede (like most Uggs) so it holds up great in the snow. I wear them a lot even if it's not snowing - just for the cold and especially the ice. I have had lots of compliments on them. The traction is great so I often wear them to work and change my shoes when I get there. I've had them 5 years now!

And in this post I can see the difference between my upper midwestern roots and most of you other posters. It would never occur to me to look for attractive snow boots. Functional is issue #1, and 2, and 3. If they're less than hideous, super, but who cares? The point of snow boots is to keep your feet dry and warm while walking through SNOW. You don't generally wear them to ballet practice or fancy dinners - think snow shoveling and slogging through slush instead.
Sorels are great boots. Merrell also makes some good ones that keep your feet warm, but they start to verge on fashionable, which in my opinion suggests that they won't be great snow boots - good snow boots, by their very nature, have to be at least a little bit chucky and ugly - how else will you get warmth, waterproofing, and good tread? |
I don't think many of the people wearing the attractive snow boots are standing in high amounts of snow for extended periods of time! I have yet to see anyone in my neighborhood walking in the snow and shoveling in "pretty" snow boots! |
i think more people are like me... getting snow on their ankles and thinking about whether it's time to buy some REAL snow boots |
Yes, but, they're thinking 'How can I get cute/hipster/not fugly boots that happen to cover my ankles?' vs. What boots are the very best at covering ankles? I'm with upper midwest lady. Sorrells rock. Suede Uggs that you have to spray and cross your fingers are for amateurs, teenagers, and Miami transplants. |
| i would not want to be stepping in the huge puddles of melted snow on every corner in suede boots sprayed with waterproofing spray. if you're getting snow boots get something that will really keep the water/melted snow out. |
That's why the 11:42 Uggs are great (shoe part not suede). |

What boots cover the ankles at least, are warm, waterproof and have great tread? Sorrells. Fashion be damned, I want warm dry feet and some traction. |
I spend a lot of time in Vermont and LOVE my Sorels! I have worn them for hours hiking around in the snow. And I like that both the lift operators, the local gas attendants, and the NY skiers ALL wear them. |
