has anyone tried building an igloo?

There was an igloo in Rock Creek park off of P St. yesterday. A bunch of guys (originally from Chicago) built it using an igloo building machine--a contraption that helped compress snow into blocks.

What is good is a snow fort. Find a big pile of snow like where you shoveled it all into a pile. If the outer crust is hardened then make a hole and hollow out inside.

It works great where snowplows have pushed up snow BUT building one there is dangerous when plows come to widen area and push snow back. Very dangerous actually.

I should note that cave ins are normal in snow forts so if you have little ones be ready for that.

Yes this is a wet snow but it isn't a great packing snow. Some of it is quite dry and doesn't stick together well such that snow forts snow men look a bit odd shaped.

An acquaintance of my sister had a little girl who just died from such a cave in.
