Why does Michigan get such negative comments from posters here?

It is good enough for Sasha Obama.

Rah-rah athlete worshipping party college... insanely huge and overwhelming campus... 500+ student lectures... rampant cheating... Greeks control social life... advisors don't care about you... more diversity administrators than mental health therapists... the bottom 10% of the college is dumb... half the college is the worst assortment of New Jersey, California and Long Island residents.

Your kid will thrive if they want to rush, drink and do coke for a few years -or- if they're the pushy super elbowy TJ magnet school sort.

First rate grad schools though.

Many put UVA on par with an Ivy/SLAC/Stanford but it doesn't get the same level of bashing, which is odd

Not sure what SLAC in the middle of that means.

2-3 naysayers? That is NOTHING for DCUM.

I want to U of M for grad school and it's a great town for students.

I can't comment on the undergrad experience but it was a wonderful grad school for public health.

Like UVA, I think some people on this board oversell it.

What?

Personally I would not send my kid, because it's a very large state school.

But it is extremely well connected in terms of graduate school and jobs. The idea of college is to get a job right/

Selective liberal arts colleges... Amherst, Williams, etc

The notion that anyone can compare a small liberal arts college to a large university is asinine. You all have absolutely, 100% no clue what you’re talking about.

You crack me up! You obviously know very little about the university, but please continue to swim in your swamp of ignorance.

I honestly think some of the hate has to do with the fact the students and alums worked hard and - wait for it - are happy. DCUM can’t always wrap their heads around it - as if the only possibilities are attending Pepperdine while surfing, or grinding it out while miserable at Penn.

Yup. PP, how do you imagine a school with crappy undergrad programs would have “first rate grad programs”? You do realize the two are interconnected, right?

I think part of this is that UVA has a preppy whitebread/bland vibe that, alas, DCUM can find soothing, whereas Michigan/Ann Arbor definitely has a more radical contingency, which DCUM can be pearl-clutching and judgemental about. Michigan also has a vocal and visible Jewish population that some preppier types still can’t roll with.

Not connected to UM, but it is arguably the best flagship state school in the country with top 10 programs in just about every discipline, and a rabid alumni network ready to hire graduates in a heartbeat.

Insane huge and overwhelming campus? LOL. Ann Arbor has many charms and facets, but huge and overwhelming it is not. Are you from a very small town, possibly in the South?
