How do you deal with extra time off for your nanny

This would really bother me. It speaks to her character. Yes, we're in a tough spot right now, and you need childcare, so maybe you need to put up with it. But, when things get better, I would definitely find someone else with a little more respect/consideration.

OK, good luck with that approach!

Ok - I’ll pay her and not say anything and reset for the new year. We pay her and 80k gross now which is more than my salary after taxes. It’s worth it to keep working for long term reasons but it’s not like both paying her and finding the $1500 for back up care that week (if that’s even possible) is nothing or that it’s normal in any job to just insist on extra time paid off not in your contract. But such is the times it seems. I’d feel better about it if she even acknowledged it like “I know I’ve used my one week pto but would you be willing to pay an additional week due to pandemic / hot market / wedding” whatever so it was an open discussion

Honestly, 80 thou is a steal. What are you bit-ching about? And if you make less than that in DC, why do you even bother working?!

I guess that’s what bugs me (and then I’ll stop posting) - in jobs when you have the upper hand market wise, you renegotiate. It’s an open convo where you ask for what you want and it’s given to you or not. But it’s not like you just start taking a bunch of time off, leaving work early and taking extra vacation, with no professional convo around it.

I’m a mom, not a nanny, and in general DCUM’s advocacy for nannies drives me crazy. I say that to give my comment context.

I really don’t think you should keep thinking in these penny pinching terms. Is she a great quality nanny? Does she give you plenty of notice when she does need time off? Is she kind and caring to your kids? Then treat her as you would want to be treated. My employer doesn’t begrudge me time off and if they did, it would cause a rift.

80K is not a steal! That is a very high salary for a nanny!

Yup $80k in DC is top dollar, anyone who says otherwise is a nanny trying to inflate nanny wages in DC.

Nope, we pay more. But then again, we expect and demand more. Money talks.

You need to have a conversation with her. Yes, you can have the time off, but NO we cannot pay you for that time as we have to work and will need to hire a replacement and our agreement was one week off which you used earlier in the year.

OP, you know these are nannies responding to you, right? No, she doesn't get unlimited PTO. I certainly don't get 5+ weeks off at my job and I wouldn't be able to keep a nanny who expects that much - unless she's some kind of magical unicorn nanny who is basically Mary Poppins.

OK, good luck with that. My guess is nanny will go bye bye, and many are paying hiring bonuses so it definitely will be worth her while.

These days, nannies are more valuable than you are. You know that school is not in session, right?! And no, I am not a nanny.

What about sickleave? Did she get sick leav? Was she leaving at three to go to the doctor or something?

Sorry to break it to you OP, but it sounds like daycare might be a better fit for you. If one week of backup child care is even a second’s thought for you, then you’re probably not a nanny family. You might want to free her up for those who are.
