My 5 and 2 year old are sick...

It could be. The kids I know who got covid (similar ages to yours) had similar symptoms--a day or two of headache, low appetite, sniffles, mild upset stomach, temp in the 99-100 range. But I also know 2 kids with similar symptoms who tested negative. So yes, get tested and isolate until you get the results. Your kid will almost definitely be fine either way but you don't want to spread it to someone more vulnerable.

This.

Have you, OP?

Are these questions helpful? No one is living in a bunker these days. You can get infected even when you are being careful. Have some empathy. The poor mom/dad has both kids sick.

No, I disagree. I think it’s a valid question. If your child is vomiting and you have been completely quarantined, it’s food poisoning and not a virus (most likely). It’s not a shaming question as many of us have to use daycare but a diagnostic one.

I agree. My SO is a pediatrician and would ask this in a diagnosis. No shame, daycare needs to happen. But there IS a chance this could be covid. It checks off the boxes.

Are people still really completely quarantined?

I know several families that are, but it is in situations where someone in the immediate family is high risk.
Grocery delivery only, no working outside of home, no playgrounds, no playdates, no daycare, etc.

Op, my 5 and 7 year olds had similar symptoms. Then I too got headaches, vomitting, itchy throat, and diarrhea. The entire family got tested for Covid. All the test were negative.

I understand, but practically speaking are we really going to test for every kid with a minor cold? Will your doctor wait a couple of days to see if things get better before ordering a test? I speak as a parent with a one year old in daycare so I’m not even sure how winter is going to work

It's not going to work. If you don't test for minor symptoms you won't catch the covid cases until it's too late. Opening up only works if we have rapid tests available right before you enter somewhere like a school etc

I have a 4yo and a 4mo in daycare. Without rapid testing, this is going to be a nightmare once cold and flu season starts.

Our family had something very similar last week, including the vomiting. Everyone got better pretty quickly, but then I had a little relapse, so I got Covid tested. I was negative in the end. There’s something going around with those symptoms that’s not Covid.

Kids are not vectors. Adolescents and adults with symptoms should be tested, but we don’t need to test kids 10 and under for minor illness symptoms.

Agree. Should be easy to figure out where the germ came from given so little intermingling in person.

Maybe ate some raw chicken or egg??
