When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, everyone thought it was ok to hit kids - parents, teachers, babysitters, relatives.
Such was the "common decency" of those times... |
| Technology makes things easier, not harder. How you choose to parent and how involved with your kids is the same. Some parents are hands on, some in the middle and many checked out. |
Agreed. -old GenXer |
+1 A lot of people rewrite the 90s. |
|
Yes, I graduated college in 2005 and might’ve been the last class to not have iPhones. I am so glad I went to college before all of that!
Loved my 90s childhood |

IDK. I feel like being a working parent is easier with tech.
Even pre COVID we both WFH a lot, and it's much more acceptable for DH to take time to coach kid sports, come to school events etc. It was harder for my dad at least, a lot more stigma. |
| FMLA was only passed in the 90’s. Working moms have a lot more options now, even though it’s still not perfect. |
I had to look up information in an old encyclopedia. I’m glad that tech is better for my kids. |

My kid who was born in 93 came to me when she was in middle school crying because she realized that people didn't want gay kids like her to get married the way any straight person can without even thinking about it. It broke my heart.
So, no, I don't romanticize the 90s one bit. Every decade has its advantages and disadvantages. |
| Everyone thinks this about their own childhood. |
LOL! I am not glad. |
I was born in '78 and I disagree. * Today's kids are so much more exposed to the entire world; you can order books and learning materials on any topic that strikes their fancy. * There is more organic food available and in cities more "ethnic" foods from around the world. * Professional life is getting more flexible and both men and women can spend more time with families. * The kids can watch Elon's rockets going into space and coming back in real time. * They are witnessing the fastest advances in healthcare and many of today's kids will benefit from them, especially genetic therapy and immunotherapy. * Gun violence and violent crime are down significantly since the 90s in almost every US city. * We are seeing a reawakening of social justice movements. The two major current issues are the corruption of the US electoral system (exhibit A: Trump administration), and of course (and related to the first), lack of action on climate change. But the world is getting better and better every year. I remain grateful and hopeful for my kids and their kids. |
You... answered your own question. Lots of people see a net negative in having a "distractor" around, or even at their disposal. |
You...don't...have to give kids ipads! |
You are crazy. Parents never had it so good. You make more money, have all sorts of machines that make life easier, plus hiring outside help. The problem is you in that you are either lazy or a crap parent or probably both. |
