Going rate for nanny fall 2020

I wouldn’t brag about paying a nanny $17:hr. It doesn’t make either you or your nanny sound particularly smart.

Genuine question; do you expect her to stay for the long term when there are so many better options right now?

I made more than that 10 years ago in normal times. I can't imagine any decent nanny accepting that these days when there is so much demand and you're dealing with the extra stress of parents wfh over your shoulder all day and not being able to go anywhere or do anything.

I think you should reevaluate whether what you're offering is competitive, if not for her, for yourself if you don’t want to be scrambling for childcare when she quits.

Why is everyone flaming the PP bc she pays her nanny $17/hr? I'm sure her nanny is happy to have a job so stop with the attacks on her. It doesn't make you better just bc you're paying more. Whatever arrangements they have is their decision. DCUM has a tendency to inflate rates.

We pay $20/hr cash for our nanny, we have 3 kids but she is in charge of 2 most of the time.

You set your price and she sets her price. Nannies will be asking for, and getting, premium pay. Forget anything under $20/hr especially if there is more than one child. If you are requiring her to be responsible for teaching them expect to pay more.

She must be illegal.

No flaming. Just pointing out that what PP is paying is not competitive and might cost her her childcare. This is a thread asking for advice, so I felt it important to note that PP is paying well below market for a legal, on the books, reliable nanny for 2 children, mid-pandemic. OP would do well to keep that in mind.

You are cheating her. She must be undocumented because a legal nanny would not take $17/hr for two kids.

Nope, fully documented and we pay taxes etc

Be nice to her. Because if she is good, you are underpaying her and some else might pay her what she is worth.

We pay $25/ hour for three kids (although the third kid will hopefully go back to school at some point and her rate would not go down if that happens). Guaranteed hours of 50 hours/ week so guaranteed 10 OT hours a week

If she was worth more she would be paid more. A nanny who knows their worth isn’t out there taking crap $17/hr jobs.

Why are you making excuses for the poster? Oh nvm, I see why.

It’s very clear, an excellent nanny isn’t accepting $17/hr for two kids. People settle for what they can afford. Nannies settle when they can’t make a decent amount bc no one else will hire them.

There’s a reason why they aren’t being hired. There’s a reason why nannies accept cash. None are positives.

There are plenty of nannies who actually prefer cash to getting taxable income. Plenty of great ones and ones that will accept less than $20/hr.

Newsflash, if they were great they would accept great jobs at great wages. A nanny that prefers not to follow the law or consider/plan for their future...yeah, they sound really smart.
