| No one playing soccer is in anyone’s breathing space long enough to virally overload another player. It is NOT necessary to wear a mask to play. |
This is the most ridiculous, unscientific load of crap I’ve ever read. So please tell me how long it takes exactly for a coronavirus to be transmit from one person to another? |
To play soccer in July? Seriously? Have you ever played sports? It’s hard enough to run around in heat on turf without something covering your mouth and nose. |
| I have a strong VO2 max. I’m fine running in the heat even with heat indexes over a 100. I have no problem wearing a mask. I can run a 7:5 min mile Yesterday I experimented running with a mask when it was 93 +. I couldn’t do it for more than a few minutes. I understand why DC mask law excludes vigorous exercise |
|
While there is no death for young people in China when the pandemic started, there are at least two reported death for students wearing N95 during PE class.
Surgical mask should be fine I think. |
Try playing football in full pads. I would gladly wear a mask vs that. Mask are nothing. |
+1 The clubs are trying to justify charging parents. They won’t admit it until it’s too obvious too ignore. |
I agree the mask would make it more difficult to breath during vigorous exercise, but it doesn't necessarily follow that it would be more dangerous to wear a mask while exercising in heat and humidity. The increased difficulty of breathing brought on by wearing the mask would translate to a decrease in performance capability. In other words, the muscles of the body would be not be able to perform as much work with a mask on than they'd be able to do without it. Less muscular work means less heat generated, not more. In other words, while the athlete would not be able to run as fast or as far, they would not be in any increased risk of overheating. Interestingly, there may even be some aerobic benefits to wearing a mask while training. There is some research showing that while "respiratory training" masks may not quite simulate the effect of altitude training (as sometimes advertised) they can stimulate a significant improvement in aerobic capacity (VO2 max). This study for example showed a 16.5% improvement in the mask group compared to 13.5% for the control group after a 6 week high intensity cycle program. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4879455/ Apparently, what's called "hypoventilation training" has been a thing for a long time: http://www.hypoventilation-training.com/historical.html#:~:text=The%20most%20famous%20of%20them,simulate%20the%20conditions%20of%20competition.. Who knew? It would still suck to play soccer in a mask though. |

I would think you would have a higher incidence of heat related issues playing with masks on in heat even if masks "feel cool".
Of course players will need to remove masks to drink water. The risk from heat related issues probably outweighs benefits of player wearing masks in scrimmage. Coaches should probably wear masks. Players not playing/not drinking should probably wear masks. |
Stop spreading fake news. My kids wear it and play basketball and soccer and they have no issues. It may be a little hot but don’t be cheap and get them cloth masked. Get the performance ones |
Can you please provide a link or two of where you got the performance masks? Thank you so much. |
No your kid is in competition with my kid. This info will give my kid a leg up! |
LOL. I know you’re just joking. |
We ordered this one earlier this summer and we just received it. Looks like it's on back order again: https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/p/ua-sportsmask/1368010.html |
Fixed it for you. |
