I'm firmly in the camp that kids at 4 should mostly play open ended games and draw and go outside and explore and help with things around the house. But now that K is pretty much first grade they will be expected at 5 to be able to sit and pay attention and follow directions and not wander off for a lot of the day. So I would set up a little desk with one or two chairs and have a set routine for each day with a dedicated 20-30 min in the am and pm for something focused. Drawing in a coloring book. Tracing letters, playing with countable objects (at the table), learning a poem/song. Etc. mostly to get used to being instructed. And also have some sort of bookshelf at their level and lots of books for them to both look at pictures and be read to. We also do a lot of outside time so we have kid sized bitterly net, magnifying loupe, shovels, spades etc. as well as picture books for kids and also some more advanced materials about nature and bugs and leaves etc. |
