Yes. Don’t buy the old navy masks. They say triple layer cotton, but they are only one layer. They count the pleats as a layer. Filter for the 1 star reviews and you can see the pictures and descriptions from people who have purchased them.

False...they are double layer. I have them. You can separate the layers.

Mine are 3 ply...not just counting the pleats. They must have different vendors. We are happy with them.

Masks from vistaprint and cut filters from material from filti. The colleges will have infected people, I would want a filtered mask in that environment.

I just know my ds will forget to remove the filters before throwing the masks in the wash! Ugh

I had the same thought. There’s just no way he is going to remove the filters before washing the masks, if he washes them at all.

Also, the mask protects other people, it does not protect the wearer, filter or not.

The adidas masks are great if you can catch them in stock. I bought some for my sons and they are machine washable and dryable, breathable, and have a pocket if you want to add a filter.

We use blue shop paper towels for filters, which could go through the wash without causing a crisis.

If they're not the right fabrics or enough layers they are not worth the money and are not protective. Please don't go with cute designs at the cost of quality. Quality does count right now.

DP. Not necessarily so. A proper filter (not just a paper towel or tissue) does increase layers and therefore conveys some protection to the wearer. I have masks with four-layer filter inserts. They are NOT going to shut out all virus, I know. But I wear them if I must go indoors someplace that is high-traffic like a grocery store.

I do understand that "My mask protects you, your mask protects me" and that masks do not protect the wearer ideally. But since many people STILL do not mask at all indoors (jerks), plus we know now that the virus can linger in the air longer than previously thought -- I want filters so I have a least a little more between me and the air in some locations.

New poster. The fact that three different people have had three totally different experiences ordering supposedly the same masks from the same company is pretty awful. You can't know, then, if you're getting cruddy one-layer junk that's useless, or three layers. I would avoid buying any masks from Old Navy if it's that much of a gamble. What a joke.

We like Vida masks, two layer cotton with pocket for filters and you can purchase their filters. Not super cheap (four masks for $36) but the fit works for us -- no gaps on the side of the face, and they have a wire nosepiece so you can shape the mask better and keep it from gapping at the bridge of the nose. Sending these to college with DC (if college really happens).

My DH actually walks and cycles in his Vida mask without the filter in and says it's fine even on these hot days. He has allergies so is masking all the time outside too.

I bought some of these, but they are not very durable and I don't have a college student who is likely to hand wash and air dry anything. The nose clip is nice, but it was poking out of the material pretty quickly.

My DS likes the Adidas masks, and I've ordered other I like from pretty random places including an online maternity retailer (Motherbee - very soft two-ply cotton, cheap, well fitting) and Aviator (random clothing company with three-ply cotton masks, filter pocket, and some elastic at the nose, very durable for the washer and dryer).

I'm sending reusable masks, but I fully expect teen boy to lose them, forget to put them in the wash, etc. Office Depot had some 50-packs of disposables for $15 yesterday so I also bought two of those.

What is a “proper filter?”

Amazon is full of small rectangular 2.5 mask filters that are made in china out of god knows what with zero safety or testing standards

google will tell you to cut up furnace or hepa filters, which again, were never meant to be anywhere near a human respiratory tract and have not been proven safe or effective to be used as something to breathe directly through, and many contain known harmful materials

only n95 masks have proven safety and filtration, but they are not accessible and not safe for wearing around campus 8 hours a day
