FCPS's "Obvious Elephant in the Room" - Does the West Potomac Expansion Foster Intolerance?

Westfield pyramid doesn't have an AAP ES or MS. Its a huge high school, too.

Yep. There are certain parts of the county that definitely get the shaft.

McNair ES and Carson MS are AAP centers and feed Westfield. The pyramids without elementary AAP centers are Annandale, Falls Church, and Robinson.

Not only that, but there are plenty of kids in Westfield pyramid that go to AAP centers. If they don't go to TJ, they go to Westfield.

I'm a MV parent....The reality is the parents that send their students to MV do not have a loud enough voice to force changes. In my 16 years of having children in the MV pyramid, we've never had someone or a group that has spearheaded an effort to help MVHS. I just don't have the energy to take on the task

How great would it be if all of the FCPS school communities united as one around this issue, and sent a strong message of the "new normal" to FCPS and the School Board - the ultimate NIMBY.

Doesn't Carson also feed to Oakton and South Lakes? I'm not sure what % of students go to the various high schools, but Westfield doesn't have an AAP middle school that's even in the same region, or many elementary schools that are AAP centers. Pretty weird considering it's such a big school.

Parts of Carson do go to Oakton.

Also, Lee HS

Some elementary students are sent to Lorton Station ES for AAP and then to Lake Braddock SS. They don’t return to Lee for HS.
It’s the same situation with Springfield Estates. Those kids eventually wind up at Edison, bypassing Lee.

Pretty sure some Westfield AAP likely go to Rocky Run, as well.

And, FWIW, Carson also sends kids to Chantilly. So, it's South Lakes, Westfield, Oakton, ancd Chantilly. Kids that go to Chantilly are from the AAP center. I think all the others also have gened from Carson.

Carson is in the Oakton pyramid.

My son is in AAP and will probably go to Rocky Run for MS and then back to Westfield, as it is our zoned high school. It's stupid that his AAP center for ES and MS are in completely different regions than our base ES, and there's no LLIV at the base schools, but the School Board has never been interested in doing anything about it.

No student should go out of pyramid for AAP services.

This is cheap, sensible and effective, and would do more to fix equity and achievement issues than anything else the school board proposes.

This truly is what folks need to start advocating for

Combine AAP in every pyramid with eliminating IB in favor of AP at all of the low performing pyramids, and fcps could fix the brain drain in the lower pyramids in around 3 or 4 years.

Hey, people. Western Fairfax doesn't really have pyramids. Franklin and Carson both feed into multiple high schools. I guess Rocky Run does, as well. Some of the elementary schools are also split.

What has happened at MVHS is a travesty. Working on this school should be a priority. FCPS cares so much about equity then all schools should be up for redistricting!

Agreed that every pyramid should have an AAP center for ES and MS, and the school board should revisit the IB schools. There should be one large IB school in which students can opt-into versus the current situation.

The excess at WestPo needs to be fed to MVHS. Corbett-Sanders is too afraid to rock the boat of the Waynewood ES-zoned parents who completely freak out whenever these changes are mentioned.

Upon being pressed, WWES parents are known to say to that they should “...send Fort Hunt ES or Hollin Meadows ES or Hybla Valley ES to MVHS”, note these are more diverse schools, but really it is them doing anything they can to prevent WW’s move to MVHS.
