Painful Breastfeeding.

Anonymous
I remember crying a few times when I had an infant because it hurt so bad. Breastfeeding is hard. It did pass and i wasn’t in pain anymore, but please don’t feel like this is something you HAVE to do. It’s ok whatever you decide.

This. Breastfeeding is so beneficial. Don’t give up now!

The benefits are blown out of proportion. In sibling studies where one was BFed and the other not (all other things being similar - same gene pool, same household, etc) there weren't any statistically significant benefits to children's health. Other research also points to very modest benefits at best. Read "Crib sheet" by Emily Oster where she analyzes the results of the actual studies. Lactivism is completely out of control in this country. It disregards maternal mental and physical state. She is a person who is experiencing pain, not a milk farm that "owes" to produce to anybody.

I had cracked nipples at the beginning. It hurt a lot. My friend send me these medela soft shells for nipples that allows them to be exposed to air - that worked like magic. Pain stopped and I healed up within a week.

Are you sure latch is good? Could your son have a tongue tie? Also, painful nursing could be a sign of thrush (yeast infection) in the breast. Talk to your doctor about that. It is really hard to get rid of.
