OP, I'm just curious, did they give lavish presents to their own parents? If so, was it their choice or do you think they felt obligated?

My MIL is a peach. My DH told me about a time when he was young and made his teenaged single-mother a card in a scrap paper and sealed it in an envelope he found in the trash. She criticized him for giving her a “garbage card”. I truly believe she is stunted emotionally because she’s just as judge mental about any and everything to this day.
