Well said. I'm worried about spread. I'm not taking my family or children, though I'd like to. But I have a lot more understanding of the motivation to protest ongoing violent race based killings than I do wanting hair cuts and in person church. (I did have sympathy for those out of work feeling desperate with a closed economy.) |
Agreed. This moment feels more legitimate and historic, but ultimately, thousands more at-risk people are going to die through the protesters' contact chains. |
The virus doesn’t give a darn about the righteousness of the cause. It is going to be a huge problem, right when we were making progress. Yes, outdoors helps. Yes, most people are wearing mask, although many improperly so they aren’t as effective. But there’s isn’t going to be even a semblance of social distancing and that is really the key. Plus, as people get tired, dehydrated, injured, etc care with respect to other precautions is going to go way down. I’m really disappointed that a lot of leaders in health policy haven’t had the courage to say this is a bad idea, although I can understand the fear, probably founded, that people would not distinguish between criticizing the cause and criticizing mass protests at this particular time in a pandemic. |

Title should be "Weekend Protests Could Be SOME of the largest..."
Protests, plural, can not be ONE of the largest in history. DC police chief is pretty ignorant. Is anyone surprised? |
Not a racist (for that). Just a sucker. We’ll call you suckers when you repeat rightwing talking points, because we know you’re listening to rightwing media and you don’t know or don’t care that it’s billionaires pushing lies at you to get your vote for tax cuts for billionaires. |
|
Go to the protests, wear a mask. Stay 6 ft away from people. If the protest march has to reach to Meridian Hill Park, who cares? Spread out. And if it has to reach to Georgia Ave on the MD border that’s fine too.
Go. Give people six feet of space. Do it. |

George Floyd tested positive for COVID in early April and survived, only to be felled by police brutality. People in the trenches--people of color just trying to eke out an existence in America--know we just may be statistically more likely to die from the latter, so some of us are taking our chances. If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention. We make these type of calculated risks all the time. It's nothing new.

Wait, I thought the virus was hoax invented by Democrats to ruin Trump’s re-elections. So no worries, you don’t need a mask. |
| Can we bring back the National Guard? |
Come on, you know this: Someone who looks like Chauvin and goes to church on Sunday and kills an innocent person on Monday. |
| The police chief's announcement made Bowser dance for joy. Yes! Let's make the protests as big as possible! Let's paint big yellow letters! Let's put up a street sign! Let's do as much as we can to shove some unfortunate realities under the carpet, that: 1) D.C. hasn't given two sh*ts about black lives for the past 50 years (and beyond), and; 2) I have been derelict in executing the laws of the city, especially around ensuring public safety and protecting private property. |
Will there be protection? |
I'm a regular person, and I'm going to one of the protests today. I will stay outdoors, wear a mask, and keep my distance. |
| And yet I still cant take my kids to a playground. The hypocrisy is amazing. |
What hypocrisy? Of course you can take your kids to a playground. Go. |
