| Any word on VA overnight camps? We live in MD but our camp is in VA. DD will likely not attend, but if it is cancelled I can get a refund? DD is scheduled to start the last week of June. |
Your camp should be sending guidance on refunds. Our sleep away camp said that they would issue refunds if requested, but would prefer that we let them keep it as a credit for next year. |
My daughter did a week of Zombie Survival at Girl Scout camp a few summers ago. I’m totally keeping her home with me when the apocalypse arrives! |
Link please. I have read two articles about his announcement yesterday and neither mentioned this. |

Here’s the order that was issued yesterday for camps: https://commerce.maryland.gov/Documents/BusinessResource/Youth-Camps-COVID-19-Directives.pdf
It says, “There will be no residential or overnight camps, and no out of state campers will be permitted.“ In my opinion, it is a little unclear whether that is true just for now (completing Phase 1 of reopening) or for the whole summer, even in later phases. But it sounds as if camps are acting as if it’s for the whole summer, and they probably know better than I do. |
| It’s very possible that opening up in August with the restrictions (25-50% capacity, etc) don’t make a partial opening feasible for most camps. Too much expense to operate for that short time, not enough revenue. Probably smarter to just cancel completely for this year or risk losing more money. |

Here's the full text of the order. While it does not specifically say that these are guidelines for the entire summer, they read that way to me:
https://phpa.health.maryland.gov/Documents/2020.05.27.02%20-%20MDH%20Order%20-%20Youth%20Camps.pdf |
| Why are all these government orders SO poorly written and lacking detail? |
| Too late everyone already closed. Too bad |
|
Even if the order could be read as only part of the summer, many camps probably couldn't meet the stringent guidance for opening even later in the summer.
My kids were totally bummed, and we'll be scrambling to find something for them to do during the weeks they were going to be away. My spouse is also disappointed, as we were planning our grown-up only getaway. |
|
Guidelines I’ve read for other places talk about excluding campers coming from other “geographic areas,” but MD’s says “out of state.” Presumably this means no campers from DC or VA?
I think that’s going to be an important clarification. |
That's what I'm figuring too. When Hogan said day camps yesterday, with restrictions, I looked up the sports camps I had in mind for my DD. Everything cancelled. And I get it, what a headache for them to have to figure out social distancing, keep camp staff (I'm thinking the college kids who work them) sitting around waiting to see if anything's going to happen... |
Hogan's rules are for Phase 2 for Maryland. Montgomery County hasn't even opened for Phase 1 yet, so I would assume that those day camp requirements wouldn't apply for Montgomery County at all yet which is why the day camps are all cancelling. Montgomery County might not even be in Phase 2 until the end of the summer. Am I interpreting this correctly? |
Yes, but (I'm 10:45) and I'm not in MoCo. |
