There was also extensive discussion about what next fall may look like and how to get players back to training. I don’t know what other clubs are doing, but that part seemed very thoughtful.

There's not a club out there that isn't making plans to return to training.

I’m not feeling good about being in this “academy” structure. Some ages have no teams, or only one. How is DD going to get “challenged” when it’s 12 players? Oh except seeing less of red team coach. Then again if DD makes white team (if there is one), apparently she can get judged once a season by the “academy coach”? Yeah I’m sure she won’t be nervous then.

Sounded pretty clear that team fees were definitely being returned and refunds given once money returned from leagues. Ok,it would be better if now but at least it’ll come in.

If you think that’s how academy works where your dd will only see an academy coach once than you weren’t listening. They train together each time. Plenty chances for everyone to be seen.

Not ideal situation to be in and I would also prefer to have a discount but it is what it is. My ds team has had plenty of interactions and kept him busy during this crappy situation.

Yeah I heard the “train together” part. About two sentences later “and academy coach will see at least one game, because game is so much more to see a player play.” Hope DD isn’t having a bad day, playing out of position since so few players, or just nervous because this is her one chance.

To me it didn’t sound like the academy coach would be attending the game to evaluate players but that he would be there to observe that the coach and team were performing in the same academy style of play. In academy setting the train together is where the player comparison is done. To me less designation of team color, more chances for my ds and your dd if designated “white” team players.

Oh so DD won’t be evaluated as a player nor for red team, just the team coach evaluated by academy coach to make sure all players are playing the same? I didn’t realize the intent was to really hammer “play the way I show you how to play”. I thought they were teaching the game. I honestly cannot believe this.

Im not with this club but the point of the academy is for all players to learn the same topics, style of play, players challenging each other daily, being observed constantly and getting opportunities to play in best setting based on their capabilities. Isn’t showing them how to play teaching the game? You guys are just twisting every word or not wanting to understand. If my kid was on a lower team I much rather they be exposed to the better players in this environment to help them get better instead of being stuck on a lower team against the same level competition and never getting the chance to move up. I guess some people are just too concerned that their status may change as little Johnny plays on a lower team for one game.

Thank you for the paragraph from "somebody not with this club". Okay. Great talking points from the exact wording last night. Should've answered my question last night:
If this will benefit the white and blue players, how will this benefit the red players? So far, seems like they'll see less of their coach and be forced to play the same way. DS is too young to be limited in his creativity.

Hilarious twisting of words. Your son isn't that good and it's not gonna hurt him to play with other kids. Most likely, all this sounds like is upper white team players getting a chance to help numbers on a given day and a set session plan for everyone. Please be sure to tell us we're wrong once he's a pro, until then maybe calm it down a bit.

I thought they merged with syc.

Merged?

Top coaches left to SYC and players followed. Clubs are in close proximity, Springfield and Alexandria. Fairfax County!

Not OP here, red team parent. Well, apparently 'academy parent' now. It's not about upper white team players, I believe the presentation discussed 'wide range of abilities across the ages and it constantly fluctuates'. So those upper white team players will benefit, but what about DS? It's not like there's 40 kids out there at training, we're talking 20-25 maybe and that's if they all show up. I'm a little worried as to how this is supposed to work. Also, this is only for U15 and below. There was no discussion at all last night for U16 and up, where there will probably only be one team per age group.

And they didn't answer my question on what they're going to do with ages that only have one team or no teams.

Well I am not with the club but understand how academy models tend to work. How does it help top team players? well it forces them to continuously play at a high level and know that there are others that would love to have their spot. They should encourage and welcome the competition instead of feeling complacent that they made the top team at a May tryout, take the whole summer off and come back a completely different player that no longer belongs on the top team while some kid on the second team worked all summer long and now is better than some others on top team but can't play there because it's harder to move a player that was offered a top team position. I've seen it on my kid's teams happen all the time where a kid no longer belongs due to the lack of training over the summer and others having putting in the work.

Well these threads are for everyone regardless of club affiliation so anyone can comment on what ever they like. The academy model seems pretty basic to understand to me but I guess not others so I thought I would help. Like the other guys said, let us know how when you DS makes pro. Get over yourself. maybe you're just too scared to have your DS get outplayed. Don't forget the bubble wrap.

If you want to know how this plays out, check out the Barca academy thread/debate. There was a long going debate about the merits of academy training, at the end of the day what happened was they basically accept anyone into academy training and it tends to water down the level of the players overall.

the very top players end up leaving and looking elsewhere. After they have left, the next group of top players once more of a challenge and then they leave. And then you simply just have kind of a mid-level semi-competitive program left in your hands

Well in that case, the top players can look to BRYC ECNL, Alexandria, SYC, and Arlington. I've already reached out for DD.

Well I think the reason it didn't work immediately with Barcelona is because they had no teams and they did allow everyone in to build the program. Not many top players left to go there. Although not at all age groups, there is some good talent at LMVSC on some teams so it may be different. We'll have to see how it plays out. I assume that although players will be training together for the entire age group, within practice they will be grouped with the equal level talent to ensure proper competition. Even on the Barcelona thread it is how it's done for training.

Good luck with that. Everyone knows "top players" left LMVSC last year!

Oh now I see. Group them together, and separate them again? So why group them together in the first place? But okay so the reason it didn't work with Barcelona (since apparently you know?) is because they didn't have many teams? Well there is no 2006 girls team, one 2007 girls team (with not that many players), one 2008 girls team (with not that many players). How is that academy supposed to work? If you ask me, we lost a lot of players last year and now we're willing to take in anybody.

And I still don't know what the plan is for showcase-playing teams. Nothing was discussed for U16 and up. The only thing I see is the same coaches, which we were told last year there was supposed to be a two year cap with a team.

I assume because when they put them together it's easier to move them around as needed based on level and you are seeing them side by side instead of asking a kid to go to a completely different practice somewhere else to see where they stand on the team. Not sure what they'll do with 06 and 07 girls but I guess they have to do something to fill those groups. If there aren't enough for more than one team than I guess the model won't apply for that specific age group and it's just as it always was.

Not sure about U16 but it sounded like this model wouldn't apply. Since everyone is invited back, they'll evaluate players then or base it on last year's performance. Maybe email them and see what they say.

Last year's departures impacted the club with player numbers for sure but I thought they handled it as best as they could given the situation.
