schools closed for end of academic year

I mean, wasn’t this already how it was going to go down? Not really a surprise. But this whole COVID thing sucks.

And not coming back fully until Maryland reaches Stage 3. That's not going to be by the fall.

Sorry Mrs. A they'll be back in the fall. Start preparing those lesson plans.

+1. Watch how magically we will reach Stage 3, just in time for school to start.

Yes, please!

Increasingly information is coming out that kids aren’t very much affected by COVID and may in fact not be little vectors of COVID as well. Hopefully by late summer more will be known.

Can you provide some links to support your assertion? I've read that the latest studies support the opposite conclusion: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/health/coronavirus-children-transmission-school.html

Kids will not go back until after Winter Break next year.

I predict January 2021. Get used to online learning.

Agreed. I think early Aug will see an announcement that MCPS is online for Fall 2020, except for students with IEPs that require small group instruction/self-contained classrooms 80% to 100% of the day. Traditionally in MCPS, those are students with profound emotional or intellectual disabilities. Everyone else is in inclusion classes all or most of the day. So, the sophomore with ODD or the non-verbal preschooler, not the fifth grader with a high IQ, but dyslexia or the seventh grader with executive functioning challenges.

That gives them four months to see how things go with the second wave. They could always decide to do 2nd semester online as well.

Maybe.

But flu season starts in the Fall. Covid will still be around. Add in flu season and it will not be feasible to have kids physically in school. Unlikely they will risk cramming kids into overcrowded classrooms and into crowded buses right before flu season, even in September.

It's not feasible to NOT have kids physically in school. To have other things open but keep schools closed? Unfeasible and also a sign of terrible priorities.

They’ll be open.

Why can't they reopen early like other states might do?

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/closing-schools-has-only-a-minor-role-in-suppressing-covid-19

An international team of scientists has recently concluded that this measure (closing schools) may have only a marginal effect, however, based on a systematic review of the available evidence on school closures during past epidemics.

I was watching the press conference but had to drop - there was a report the Superintendent was waving around. Does that contain the information about school not coming back until MD reaches Stage 3? Anyone know where we can find that report?

Did she actually say anything about phase 3? Phase 3 is all undefined anyway. Just like the rest of it. I’m guessing they start rushing the phases as people get tired of this. They’re already starting to.

It's not undefined at all.

I am a teacher and I am truly hoping school starts in September. There are still 4 months.
If not, MCPS should find a way to accommodate us so that we can go inside the classrooms and teach live,
It's happening in other places outside the USA.

Did she specify if counties must continue the current school year through the scheduled last day of school, or if they will have the discretion to end early? I know MCPS said they were staying with 6/15, but it is pointless to continue this into June. It will be impossible to keep the students engaged, if they haven't already checked out by then to begin with.

Teach live at home, teach live at school, what is the difference?

The study quoted didn't look at kids as vectors. The authors note that additional research needs to happen to answer that question. The recent studies quoted by the NYTs do attempt to answer that question.

The report hasn't been posted yet. Hopefully in the next day or two. Hogan is following Hopkins' 3 phase guidance (https://governor.maryland.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/MD_Strong.pdf) which states that schools can start to open during Phase II but with physical distancing limitations.

OK so what are the exact criteria for schools to reopen?
