If your kids' school reopens, will you send them?

This. I lean towards yes, but it really depends on a lot of unknowns

Absolutely. No hesitation. Can't even envision a fall with no school. I have to work and DC can't take this unstructured time.

The kids are going to be okay. The risk is not to them. I am high risk but no doubts on them going to school.

Other answers would be people who could homeschool anyway - that is not my life.

This. It is the law. You would need to officially unenroll your child in the school district and enroll them into a homeschool program.

Failure to educate your children is treated seriously in our society and CPS would be called at some point if your children don't show up at school.

I'm the OP and of course my question is not whether people plan to violate the law. Resourceful DCUMers are perfectly capable of clearing the regulatory hurdles.

No it's not. You're legally permitted to home school.

Will have to wait and see.

This. It’s shocking to me how many people think they can just not show up at their job or not send their kid into school and there will be no consequences.

Quit your job and homeschool your kid if you’re that concerned. That’s really the only option.

+1. And I highly doubt the truant officer is going to be working overtime in the middle of a pandemic. But yes I’m capable of filling out a form. I’ll have to do that anyway if we are distance learning because our school is phoning it in.

Literally no one said they will "just not show up" obviously my question is about what people will do within the law.

This, I would send them next week if schools were reopening then.

I homeschooled my daughter for a year for various reasons and you do not have to “enroll in a program.” You write a letter of intent to the superintendent, provide a copy of your high school or college diploma, and go on your merry way. You are required to submit proof of progress at the end of the year. Many people do this by paying for an online test similar to the SOL.

+1. Lots of uncertainty right now. Can't make this decision now.

Nope. I'd wait and see.

Same, and we both teach ES.

Yes. Without question. Zero evidence that schools cause any spread.
