I’ve lost 40lb so why...

Congratulations, you are doing great!

I had a similar problem when I was finally losing pregnancy weight. I couldn't see a significant difference but I think part of the issue also was that I didn't see myself as big as I actually was at my heaviest. The thing that reassured me when I was feeling like the work wasn't showing was putting old pants next to new pants. There's no denying that!

Yay!! Congrats to all who are on a weight loss journey! Thanks, its encouraging!

I think it’s kinda great you don’t feel different- you aren’t different. I would describe feeling “different” mostly when I am working out and can feel body getting stronger - and it’s awesome.

My perspective comes from my size/height/weight fluctuation being 7-8% of my body weight but mostly same pants sizes.

That jerk phrased it indelicately. But I lost 30 lbs and really didn't see any difference until I was at the very end of my goal (I went from size 8 to size 4). And I mean, within 5 lbs of my goal. So assuming this isn't goal weight, don't let it disappoint you. You ARE making SERIOUS progress.

You still big

You are weird.

As others have mentioned - look at photos of yourself. Also, process (by yourself, with close friends, with a therapist?) what you were expecting with weight loss. Greater happiness? To feel sexier? More energy? Are you more active now, or lose weight just through diet? You may need to change other things in your life - including perspective - in order to achieve "feeling different."

I believe it's the same reason why being fat and tall is not as noticable and more acceptable than fat and short. The fat has more places to go on your taller body.

If you were short the difference could be more noticeable.

Congratulations on your weight loss! You are doing an incredible job!

It is really hard to notice our own change. I have lost 30 lbs over a few years (10 lbs on year and 20 last year) and still have hard time believing i look much different. I mean know i look different. I am down 2 pant sizes, down 3 bra cup sizes, and when I see old pictures I can't believe I was that much heavier. Definitely body dysphoria going on. I also think that when we get to a smaller size we don't necessarily look the way we thought we would, a lot of times the image we have in our head is a good 10-15lbs less that what we weigh or so that is my case and why I am working on losing the next 10. Still I wonder if I will ever be satisfied.

Incorrect. OP has a BMI of 24.5. That’s in the range of healthy weight.

Go away PP.

+1 I was going to say 166 at 5'9" is in the healthy range. I am 5'7" and 163 and that is considered healthy. So there is no way that someone who has 2 inches and 3 pounds on me is overweight.

OP: I don't know why you are not seeing the difference. I dropped from 180 to 163 and I have been able to see the difference as I have been losing weight.

Maybe it is how you are doing it? I added cardio and strength training so I am seeing some toning, not a 6 pack or bulging biceps, but enough to see that my body has been changing. If you have lost the weight mainly through nutritional changes, which is how you lose weight, and not making changes in exercise it might be that your body shape has not changed that dramatically? Grasping at straws here...

It’s the paper towel effect. As you unroll a paper towel roll, removing the top layers doesn’t make it look very different. Once you get to the last 10 squares, the visual effect is drastic. Once you get closer to your ideal body weight you will look very different, OP.
