"As someone with a PhD from Cornell, I would not do it. My opinion is that it's not worth more than a couple thousand a year to move up 20 places in the university ranking if the field has plenty of jobs."
As someone with a PhD from a state school in a STEM program that is ranked higher than ANY Ivy in it's field, I would go to Cornell. Lots of students start school thinking they are going to major in X and it doesn't work out. At Cornell, any old Y major is likely much more than 20 places in the rankings than Y major at state school. That idea goes double in terms of jobs. While CS may seem like it can weather any economic down turn, even when a down turn means lots of CS jobs shipped over seas, what if DC graduates in major Y? |

Cornell is one of the top schools in the country. Ithaca is a beautiful place when the weather is nice. My only concern is mental health. It can be a pressure cooker, and any school that has to put netting under bridges to prevent jumpers clearly has issues.
Money is another factor. My DD fell in love with Cornell when we visited. I showed her the EFC from there calculator...and how much money we had. I can pay her 4 year tuition at our state school, but would have to come up with an addition 20K per year for Cornell. DD is probably going to a field that requires grad school. W & M will get her into just as good of a grad school as Cornell for about 1/2 the cost. |

"It can be a pressure cooker, "
Many of the W&M grads I know would agree with this statement. Not that I know how to figure out how to measure pressure, nor do I have recent data or even examples for either school. |
| I’ll be sending my D to one of the best ivy schools in CS for the price of a state uni. I’d have to be stupid to turn down the ivy. |
| I have never met a nice person who went to Cornell. All the Cornell grads that I know are hyper-competitive to the point of having no ethical qualms about lying, backstabbing or screwing over others in order to get to where they want to go. So, no, I wouldn't pay for my kid to go there, and I also wouldn't hire someone who went there. |
Said every competitive person in a capitalist society. |
| My kid WL at Cornell and willing to pay Full Price for an Ivy degree over a top 15 SLAC where he is getting merit. Any Ivy stays with you forever. Would cost us $120,000 more over the SLAC and $150,000 more than in-state at William and Mary which is our only in-state option. We are full pay due to income. |
Very nice option if you have it...most do not. |
What top 15 SLAC gives merit? |
Not this poster but several schools have programs: Davidson, Washington and Lee, etc. |
I don’t think the Penn/Cornell part of Ivy confers this benefit. |
It definitely does in many majors (including the one OP's kid is pursuing). |
| Top GPA at Cornell in premed. Definitely a pressure cooker. If you don't have the money or think that it is right for you, skip it and do honor's at UMD. |
