Ruining our natural immunity

Anonymous
Before modern sanitation countless people used to die from bacterial infections and viruses that are easy to treat today. All that “natural immunity” didn’t prevent it at all.

My youngest has food allergies and I am convinced it was because I was too clean and kept her inside because she was a winter baby. I always said if I knew then what I knew now I would have taken her out more and been less anxious about sanitizer etc. Didn’t help that she was born in the h1n1 year. First child was born in summer and she was out everywhere and I think I was too young to over think which seems to be a problem with me now. Anyway my gut is we are becoming the world in the plastic bubble. What is the remedy? I don’t know but feel like some of these scientist need to address how to protect from
Covid and protect from weakening immune systems. I predict many more food allergy diagnosis in next few years.

it's not too late. let you kids out and you go out and hope for the best. sounds smart?

Go op. Do what you need to do with your family and build that immunity. Though reinfection and immunity hasn’t been proven. You can certainly try and take that risk

So the OP posts what is actually an interesting question...and you two essentially respond with...go kill yourself and your baby?

Maybe time for a zoom therapist?

OP,

Please consult a good allergist. Your beliefs are not confirmed by biomedical research. We don’t know exactly why there are more people with allergies in the world today. The “hygiene” hypothesis is just that - a hypothesis. Excess pollution, processed foods, and immune system disruptors in the environment have also been pointed to.

Lol.

Thank G-D I'm not the only one! I'm walking barefoot on my floors and totally grossed out. Need to get some socks on -- if there are any clean ones around! Somehow my daughter managed to get pinworms, even though she hasn't been around other kids since March 13, so I have no idea what's still lurking around my home that is helping our immune systems stay strong.

For OP my winter born no allergies summer born multiple food allergies. No other close or extended family member have allergies. Don't overthink.

No. My 4 year old was just sick with a fever and we have had very limited contacts. I asked the doctor and she said she could've gotten it from anyone - us or babysitter. It was a childhood virus that everyone has in their system already and is now immune. She got better in 2 days. So no, I don't think we're ruining our natural immunity. There are still plenty of germs out there to keep our immune systems working. No need to challenge it with COVID-19. Same with polio, measles, pertussis, etc.

I live in a house with my husband and 3 kids and a cat.
We aren’t great about taking our shoes off when we come in.
We aren’t doing as good of cleaning ourselves now that we pay cleaning lady not to come.
We go outside every day.
We do takeout once a week and grocery shop once a week and don’t disinfect the groceries or mail or packages, etc.
I only use Clorox wipes about once or twice a week to wipe things down around the house (after my husband comes back from the grocery store usually).

I am thinking that’s probably roughly good enough general immunity I guess.

My spring baby has food allergies; no one else does, and I don't even have seasonal allergies. We personally aren't overdoing it with the sanitizer, in my mind. If someone goes to the store, they sanitize hands once and then wash with soap at home. It's not like we're going around using sanitizer like crazy. We clean the house once a week per usual.

Personally, I think my son got his allergies from an overuse of antibiotics in his first year- step b positive during delivery and I had a fever, so abx then. He had multiple terrible ear infections with tons of abx and got tubes at 10 months. I think all of that did his gut flora in.

Prior to this I would only was my hard when going to the bathroom, never after the metro or going out in public.

I also haven't been sick in over a decade.

I eat very healthy and work out 4 times a week.

I'm being more diligent with Purell, masks, hand washing now but I'm not wrapping myself in a bubble.

You got to live, if I get it I get it and the numbers are in my favor.

If you keep a super clean house then, yes, you aren't doing your kids any favors.

My oldest sibling grew up while my parents were living in my grandparents old dirty house, with lots of other people and assorted animals around. I grew up living in a newer house my mom kept pristinely clean. Guess who has allergies? Me.

I don't think it has as much to do with going out in public as it does letting your environment and yard have some germs in it, and letting the kids wallow in germs and have pets.

OP your food allergy hypothesis is not confirmed by science.
I have 4 kids. Two are twins. Only one of the twins has food allergies. Please explain!

Also, OIT works.

Just saying

Especially if you have 3+ cats - way reduces the chances of asthma!

I grew up playing in the dirt and surrounded by pets. Developed chronic allergy-related eczema at 12 and had it on and off till 40. My mother was a farm kid and suffers from food allergies. We are from a country nowhere near as hygiene obsessed as the US. You need to relax, OP. Stop looking for examples that only confirm your theories.

Do NOT use hand sanitizer. Just use normal soap. That’s what we are doing. House is cleaner than ever (I am a bit OCD) but kids somehow get just as dirty so I think they are somehow getting some germs. And I did get a runny nose and sore throat even though we haven’t left house in 6 weeks (we are exclusively grocery delivery) so they are bringing in some illness.

It’s weird how some of you are completely unable to have a discussion of an interesting topic without saying angry and mean things like this.

Because some of us are so tired of you stupid people.
