I wouldn't consider Marshall high SES - have you seen the student body?

Broad Run in Loudoun v. Stone Bridge or Rock Ridge or Briar Woods? Broad Run is way lower SES than the above mentioned schools.

Consider TJ: 70.2 percent Asian, 20.7 percent White, 5.1 percent Multiracial/Other, 2.4 percent Hispanic, 1.6 percent Black:

Not a true representation of FCPS!

It has been ranked that high at times in the past.'

All these ranking methodologies change over time. This is a summary description of the current US News weighting.

"College Readiness 30%

The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed at least one AP or IB exam. Passing is worth three times more than just taking.

Math and Reading Proficiency 20%

Aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.

Math and Reading Performance 20%

How aggregated scores on state assessments compare to U.S. News's expectations given the proportions of students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households.

Underserved Student Performance 10%

Scores on state assessments aggregated just among students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared to what is typical in the state for non-undeserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.

College Curriculum Breadth 10%

The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a maximum of four. Passing an exam is worth three times more than taking.

Graduation Rate 10%

The proportion of entering 9th graders who graduated four academic years later."

Oakton is very high in terms of "College Readiness" but got dinged a bit for "Math and Reading Proficiency" and even more for "Math and Reading Performance." US News doesn't disclose the "Underserved Student Performance" component separately, but that may have pulled Oakton down as well this year.

I think it's great Marshall is so highly ranked. It is constantly panned on this forum.

It always surprises me that no one complains about the ‘lack of diversity’ at TJ. Because if it were 70% white, everybody would be up in arms.

I don't see GCM getting "constantly panned" on this forum at all.

It's a good school (had a kid there). It's ranked this highly because it eliminated honors English and obtained FCPS permission to make IB English the default English course for students in the upper grades. No other neighborhood high school in FCPS does this, and it jacks up the "College Readiness" component of the US News ratings. You'd be naive to think Litz didn't do this with at least one eye on the ratings impact.

This isn’t new. It’s been sliding for a while now.

It was ranked fourth in the state by US News last year. It just shows how these rankings bounce around.

Of the 15 LCPS high schools, 13 are in the top 72, then there's Tuscarora (107), Potomac Falls (109) and Park View (128).

Park View, I can understand but why the big gap between PFHS and the rest? I don't understand it.

Seriously shocked by the fact that Dominion, PF and PV are within a few miles of each other in Sterling but Dominion kicks PF's a$$. How are those two that different?

Dominion has some wealthy areas in the northern part of its district. That's where Trump's golf course is.

And they don't call PF "Pot Falls" for nothing.

People complain...only anonymously. LOL.

West Springfield and Woodson are two other good schools that aren't at the top of the SES heap.

I agree, but 4th to 11th is a pretty big drop in one year. Kinda hard to believe.

underperformers have a school to aspire to

What do you base this on? Personal experience? The fact that the school has too many points or brown people? I wonder why people who have no experience with this school love to pick on it.
