Paid parental leave - COVID-19 Families First

Same here. I'm gonna catch up on assignments and then talk to boss about scaling back to working 6 hours a day.

No, that's not at all what it says. If you can't work because your kids need care, you can take leave.

However, I'm hearing it's being denied by employers.

From the OP: Have you heard about the paid parental leave that's available for employed parents now expected to work from home? Are you using it?

What's to prevent my employer from deciding I MUST go on it because I have young children? That's a huge pay cut that I can't afford.

Then you will not be working and your employer will not get any work out of you.

But I can't afford it. And with less work, I can watch an 8 year old and telework now. My performance bears that out. This is a horrible law.

Your employer can't just decide to "put you on it". If you CANNOT WORK because of COVID-19 related reasons (you are sick, you are caring for your children, etc.) then YOU MAY OPT TO TAKE IT.

No one is forcing you to take the leave, OP. If you're working from home, great!

But now with this law, my company can say, " our policy is no telework without childcare. If you can't comply, file for leave."

Some feds and defense contractors can’t telework. They work in secure locations and can’t do work remotely. You used to have to take pto or leave your kids home alone. Now you can take this leave instead.

They could have done that before- made you take unpaid leave or use up your PTO.

If your performance isn’t suffering from WFH with a kid, they very likely will not say anything. Calm down.

Yeah, my employer is obviously making the new leave available, but we are slammed and hoping people don't need to take it. We've suspended the no telework w/o childcare rule.

The OP is poorly worded. The leave has nothing to do with telework: it allows you time off to care for kids. Whether you telework or work on site when you are not on leave, is irrelevant. Read the link, it's a Q&A.

It is written as if a ton of federal employees would qualify. However, most agencies are excluded. My agency flatly came out and said it does not apply to us.

It only applies to federal agencies that are covered by Title I of the FMLA. Most are Title II.

The DOL has a helpful question and answer document on the law if you google it.
