Would you throw away expired Diet Coke?

Anonymous
Taste it first. It's not unsafe to drink -- if that's your question. It might taste flat though. Unlike, say, dairy products, there is absolutely nothing in Diet Coke that can possibly rot.

Props to your DH though. Going out of his way to through out expired food sure beats the alternative!

Pepsi started dating its soft drinks in, what, the 90s? They called it "freshness dating" with the msg that if it was past that it wouldn't tase as "fresh" and you should buy more. It was all a marketing ploy.

To give their customers the freshest carbonated drinks possible, soda companies print date codes on the individual cans. There is no federal mandate for placing date codes or expiration dates on cans, but companies recommend drinking the sodas before the printed expiration date. Turn the soda can upside down without excessively shaking the can.

I say put it curbside, and let me know when

My DH checked it and hearing that it had "expired" didn't faze me. I assumed he was putting it away in the cupboard but I walked into the kitchen to see him dumping two cans down the drain. I was like, HOLD UP. He insists that he used to drink expired Diet Coke, but it made him sick/gave him stomach issues. I told him that seemed odd and that if anything it should just be a little flat.

It is likely that drinking Diet Coke gave him stomach issues. It's doubtful it had anything to do with the "expiration" date.

I was going to tell you to dump it because who needs diet coke or any soda, but since you asked about expiration date, it's good to drink.

The aspartame in Diet Coke/Diet Pepsi breaks down and tastes less sweet over time. Might not taste as good, but still safe.

The thing about expired diet soda is how it is stored. A few months is fine but longer than 6 months in warm temps it starts to become formaldehyde.

This is good for another 6 months. Drink up.

It takes years before it loses the sweet taste. It’s fine.

Yes, but I've also thrown away unexpired diet Coke, so probably not your target audience on this question.

This is the issue. I’ve tossed it when it gets really off, which doesn’t take that long. 2 months is okay but by 4-6 months it really starts to taste off.

True for regular coke, not for Diet Coke.

I would toss any Diet Coke. Gross tasting and bad for you.

Google how Diet Coke causes cancer. Get a refund on expired Diet Coke and order a case of water. Diet Coke will kill you before the corona virus
