Anyone going to become an accidental SAHP because of corona?

DP here. I would never be without my own income, but in OP's situation I would likely quit that job, ride out this current emergency (possibly with some from-home gigs) and then find a new job that's more flexible. Inflexible hours is tough with little kids.

That's a terrible idea. She earns TWICE what her husband earns. Where do you think she's going to find another job anytime soon?

Everyone who works somewhere will be running out of personal leave and employers will have to deal with it. Restaurants might (will) close, but healthcare industries will have to figure out flexibility for their employees.

Given the economic uncertainty, I would hold on to any job I have right now.

My daycare isn't closed. Maybe you can find one that is open and has space since a lot of folks are keeping kids home.

Finding a new job now or anytime soon may not be very easy. I wouldn't give up what you have now. Do your best to spread out some leave and have both you and your husband ask for some concessions. Perhaps he can work earlier in the morning and later at night?

There's no inferiority in being a SAHM.

Love that you can't even try to argue about the dependence part...

Hey, aren't we all tired of the nonstop coronavirus talk, can we get back to the eternal SAH/WOH battles that usually keep DCUM hopping?

If there is in PP's mind, then she's not mentally suited to the role.

True. Having mental problems would be a barrier to quite a few roles including paid ones.

Don't quit your job. You don't know what's coming economically.

This is idiocy.

Her DH makes TWICE her salary. If he loses his job the family is screwed. If she loses her job, the family still has 67% of their HHI. That’s manageable especially since they would also have no childcare expenses.

Be realistic!

Yes, this happened to us. DH laid off before CV was an issue, landed a new job then they retracted the offer due to CV (and had to lay-off their own employees), I am the only breadwinner.

No, she earns half what her husband earns.

The Great Recession made me one. My entire industry went away. I am still a SAHM now.

Economically, this week reminds me so much for late 2008 only worse. There is no bottom this time.

OP, you asked if this is covered by leave. Yes, this is the exact situation covered by the coronavirus relief bill passed by Congress and signed by Trump on Weds.

The bill covers paid family and sick leave, but the devil’s in the details. If your hospital employs more than 500, you’re not eligible.

This has a cause, and it will end.
You not working for 12 years isn’t due to the economy.

Your post should say... is anybody going to be a SAHP because their H is incompetent.

+1. People go back to school and switch professions all the time. It’s possible if you’re motivated. Don’t blame the economy for your permanent unemployment. Also, I have no idea what “there is I bottom” means, but given her likely level of knowledge about how the economy works, I’ll take that assessment with a giant grain of salt 😀
