| I like it—I’d pronounce it “Mah-ruh”. If you are going for “More-uh”, I’d spell it “Moira”. |
| Mara is better |
Nobody’s going to care about a decades old Netflix show when the kid is growing up. It’s going to be 100% irrelevant to this little girls generation. |
"Moira" is more typically pronounced "Moy-ra" not "More-uh". I think OP's spelling is best if you want a "More-uh" pronunciation. That is how the 4 in my extended family spell/pronounce it. OP - I like Maura much better than Ethel. I'm not one to try to predetermine nicknames, especially for shorter names. I think you are likely to end up with a little "Mo" on your hands once you get to school age, but I like Rory. It's on my name list currently (though for a boy). Maura Rose is lovely. |
| Too many Rs! |
| I had a roommate named Maura for six months during college and I still am not 100% sure I can pronounce it correctly |
| I have a Mara. "Mar-ah" No nickame. Went with a long middle name. |
This^^^^!! Mara is how you’d spell it if you wanted it pronounced “Mah-rah” or “Mah-ruh.” Moira is pronounced “Moy-Ruh” and Maura is pronounced “More-uh.” It’s my middle name. Much more interesting than my actual name. |
Maura is so much better than Ethel. However, I don’t see Rory as a nickname for Maura, but at least it’s better than your first choice. I’m 50 and I’ve only known one other Maura my entire life. |

Maura pronounced like Laura? I love it. But not with Rose as a middle name! Rose is the Ann of our kids generation - everyone’s middle name is Rose.
I love Rory as a nickname or stand alone name. |
| what? |

I almost feel like we are related.
If my younger brothers had been sisters, they would have been named Maura. And my great grandmother was named Ethel. |
It's a family name for us. |
