Informal Poll for MCPS teachers: do you have an uptick in absences yesterday or today?

MCPS elementary school teacher here. I had one student absent.

I have 15 in my kindergarten class. Yesterday, I had 3 absent, which is unusual. Today, I had the same 3, plus 2 more and then one left early for an appointment. Nothing like an afternoon read aloud with 9 students.

I had 10 kids absent on Monday and all but 3 came back today. Most of them said they were tired yesterday so they stayed home.

I kept my son home today because he had an injury. I’m so glad his teacher didn’t assume it was coronavirus.

Why? I mean do you think a teacher would think your child took just one day off for COVID-19? You don’t send an email anyway to let the teachers know why Larlo is out?

Mcps parent here. My child told me today that one of their classmates has been sick since last week and apparently that child has severe cough and fever. I was not that concerned before and didn't feed into the media frenzy, and was against closing schools.

Now I am worried that it could be corona virus. I am aware that the effects on children are not that serious but concerned that if that child has corona virus, this could affect more kids who are going out and doing their regular thing and could be spreading it.

I guess Karma? for calling people nuts for being overly anxious?

Apology accepted. Stay well and safe.

Building services doesn't have the staffing to actually clean anything - they just sweep the floors and replace bathroom products. When I used to clean the desks after school every day, I got parent complaints about chemicals, so my classroom is saturated in germs.

Also, I had to send two miserable feverish kids to the health room today -- I don't understand people sending their kids to school sick in a normal environment, but doing it now just seems crazy.

I’m OP. Last week, I sent a child to the nurse at the start of 4th pd. She returned and said she had a fever. I emailed the nurse to ask if she did indeed send a feverish child back to class and the nurse said it was a Hippa violation to tell me.

Did you send the child right back to the nurse? I’m a people pleaser to a daily in all areas of my life it with this s**t I’m not having it. I wouldn’t allow a feverish kid in my classroom.
