protocol for paying for activities?

Yes this. I never send money with my kids and never ask if other kids have money if they come out with us. But everyone in my social circle has UMC or higher income. The only exception has been when a friend's early 20s aunt took our kids along bowling we gave her money to cover her expenses when we picked up.

Send kid with some cash to at least buy drinks or snacks fir him and friend.

I'm a single mom and I wouldn't invite your kid somewhere and expect you to pay. Part of the reason I'm inviting your kid at all is because my kid will have more fun with a friend along, so in some ways, you are doing ME a favor by lending me your kid. Little kids don't always do well with money.

IF she said it's her treat, then no, don't offer to pay. You could put a few buck in your kid's pocket and tell her that Larlo has money for snacks, but it's not a big deal.
