Buying a suit for a teen boy (advice needed)

You can get a cheap suit, such as from places like macy's, zara or H&M, and then go to a quality tailor to make alterations to make it well fitted--just make sure the suit jacket fits his shoulders. The tailor can readily alter the length and size of the sleeve, the length and taper of the suit jacket.

The final product will be as good, if not better, than suits you get off the rack from premium places. The main difference between a cheap suit and a quality one is a matter of whether the suit is fused or fully canvassed. Those qualities, however, don't really show until several wears and only someone who is into fashion can tell the difference off the bat.

Also, any kid that plays band or orchestra needs dark colored dress slacks anyway, so you might as well get the dark colored suit instead of the khaki pants and navy blazer, unless he has lots of other places to wear a navy blazer.

I got my teen a decent suit at Jos A. Banks for about $150, but my kid complains that it makes him look like an old man. I guess you can get a hipper suit at Express or H&M.

DS is in band but they require black pants. I'm very surprised that middle school graduation requires a jacket. I was also shocked to see that the high school orchestra (and band too, I think) boys wore tuxes.

I couldn't disagree more. Where I grew up, the kids in suits were the poor, uncultured kids while the educated, wealthy, cultured kids wear a blazer and khakis. It's classic and timeless and appropriate for almost any situation in the eyes of anyone that matters.
