With daycare costs that is out of budget. Maybe we need to give him up?

Sounds like it.

Your dog will need to slowly get adjusted to this schedule.

Our dog is let out at 6 am and not again until 3-4 in the afternoon when my daughter gets home from school. No peeing in the house and he even sometimes won’t go right outside when DD tries to let him out.

OP your dog will be fine.

We installed a doggie door on the balcony doors leading to our back balcony, and put down a pee pad.

I hate that I laughed, out loud, at PPs who suggest giving up the baby.

Don't change, DCUM.

Big dogs can hold it longer than little dogs. My friend has trained her small dog to go on a pee pad in a specific spot.
My large dogs do fine for 8-10 hours at a stretch. Like the PP’s dog they will sometimes take their sweet time to go out even after I’m home. You can find a solution, OP.

This is needlessly dramatic, unless you’re looking for an excuse to dump the dog.

omfg, why did you get a dog? What are you going to do if/when he gets sick? I don’t understand people at all.

You two posters should not be posting on DCUM, you are both too realistic. Around here you need to be overly dramatic and jump on people who don't live up to a certain standard.

We got a neighborhood kids to walk our dog every week day for not very much money. All you need is a young, responsible child. It's the perfect first job for a young tween as they can probably walk to your house to do the job.

Get a kid to let him out; get a doggy door. Try work at home. Find a solution.

Find a middle school neighbor. My nephew walked a dog after school for $5 a day. He loved it and for him it was such an easy way to earn what he thought was a lot of money each week.

Another dog owner here who doesn't pay a dog walker to walk the dog. We have a 65 lb dog and she goes out around 7am and doesn't go out again til 4pm. She gets a nice looong walk in the evening, no matter the weather, when we get home from work.

Normally I am pretty pro-pet in these situations but I agree. Our dog is 2.5 now and we slowly worked her up to 8 hours. She is fine with plenty of walks and attention when she is home. In fact, when DH does occasionally go home at lunch she is just sleeping.

If it truly is only 8 hours (and not actually 10 or something) your dog will be just fine. Just work him up to it. Getting rid of him over this is really drastic and silly.
